Sam would like a big vacation, please.
He needs one asap.
But since he is Captain America, the sweet escape isn't available for him, unfortunately.
Which is why he finds himself in front of Ophelia Adams' doorsteps, his right fist ready to knock.
Sure, she is Karlis guardian now, but Sam still has to check up on her to ensure the government, or better yet, Ross, that Karli is in no need to go to prison.
Sam did his research, and indeed, the soulmate laws exist.
But he is doubting them.
He doubts Karli fucking Morgenthau is turning pliant and obedient, because her soulmate is forcing her to be with her.
It doesn't really make any sense to him. Karli is against suppressors and discrimination and oppression, it's why she started the Flagsmacher movement in the first place, but his soul mate being the oppressor changes the game?
Ophelias reports of her behaviour do tell exactly that. The law obviously doesn't allow you to just take your soulmate and do whatever, you have to do certain reports and turn up for your soulmates mandatory therapy.
If you don't, both of you go under surveillance for a while, only to dissolve the right to be your soulmates guardian. So, if you miss those data's, you are no longer entrusted with your soulmates live.
But as of now, Ophelia has been doing everything perfectly, and Karlis therapy reports also insist, she is better and calmer than ever.
Sam, quite frankly, has to see for himself.
Before he can knock though, the door dissapear from sight and in the door frame stands Ophelia, a sharp eyebrow risen to her hairline.
"You gon' stand here a lil' longer like an idiot, or...?" She asks and Sam's mouth hangs open.
"I didn't..!"
"You been standing behind this door frowning holes into my doormat for five minutes gay. You in or nah?" She looks bored, and Sam can feel his cheeks go red in embarassment.
Without a comment, he steps into the house and looks around. It looks cosy and nice, like a family house, and he takes off his shoes out of politeness, to not bring dirt into this fine house, only for Ophelia to unattractively snort at him.
He glares at her in response, and finally gets why those two especially are soulmates.
"So, you here to check on my bitch?" Ophelia asks, and Sam guages at her, thinking he misunderstood. But Ophelia looks unbothered.
"Tha-, You, you can't call her that!"
"Why? She likes that, especially around sexy tim-"
"I don't need to fucking know that!" He cries out desperately, but before Ophelia can answer, a creaky door whooshes open and there stands Karli.
Sam lets out an unbelievable grunt of surprise. And, no, he doesn't stare at her because he is a creep.
No, he does, because Karli Morgenthau looks... like the child she deserves to be.
Gone are her glare-eyes, sharp, angry and mad at the world for abandoning her and leaving her to die, and are replaced by soft brown eyes, big and naive.
Her fighting gear she fought in back in New York has been stocked away and she stands there in a hoodie that is way too big on her shoulders, so it's most definitely Ophelias. She fiddles with the sleeves a bit, a high embarrassed red colour sitting on her cheeks before meeting his eyes.
"I'm sorry, Sam. I didn't want to hurt you, nor Mr. Barnes." She says.
And a picture of Bucky touring in Sam's hoodies enters his mind. Oh, what Sam would do to make Bucky allow him to come along on his "amend walks." What he would do to stand next to him, to have a grounding hand on Bucky's shoulder and to tell him how proud he is.
Sam would kill and more for that.
So far Bucky had amended four people, the way Sam talked him into. But Sam regrets that, oh, he does regret that.
Because the man walking out of Sam's house, determined to make things right, is not the same one walking back in, shoulders hunched and shaking, voice small and soft, and blue eyes too afraid to meet his brown ones.
On those days, Bucky never asks for hugs. Never meets his eyes, and never sleeps.
But, this isn't about Bucky, but about Karli. Who had proved herself worthy of going the path of recovering.
Sam needs to give the final okay for Karli to get integrated back into society and if not even two weeks spending with her soulmate gets her like this, nice, polite and friendly, then he doesn't see a problem as to why she would cause trouble as a member of society.
Sam also knows what liars look like, as a consellour he had people walk in lying straight through their teeth, but those two are nothing but honest to him.
It makes him frown.
He thinks Karli deserves a second chance, he does, but when he asks how her behaviour changed so drastically, she only shruggs and answers with the soul mate bond snapping into place.
Everyone heard of that, at least. The soulmate bond snapping into place means your two souls finally connected and you learn to influence each other's behaviour and habits.
It is actually pretty beautiful, because it means you depend on each other the way you should. Sam just never thought a forced law would also make the bond snap in place.
Sam walked in doubting the soulmate law.
Sam walks out thinking this might be the only chance for him and his soulmate to be together.
A/N: pls comment y'all😭😭😭
