Haylee’s POV

The party was amazing! PJ and Chris had shown up and things had gotten started. We had kicked things off with an all-out dance party after supper. Finally, Dan broke out the wine and I was excited. I had never wine, and it was my first time trying it. Dan and I had promised each other we wouldn’t get drunk until after midnight, but a little was fine. We wanted to remember our first New Year’s kiss.

Ten o clock rolled around and we’d begun to play wii games. So far it was bowling and Chris was winning. It was getting closer and closer to midnight and I was nervous. By eleven, Chris and PJ had drunk a good amount, but were still sort of sober.

Dan’s POV

Finally midnight rolled around. I grabbed Haylee and kissed her at 11:59, December 31st, 2012, not stopping until 12:01, January 1st, 2013. “It’s the last thing you remember from 2012 and your first memory of 2013.” I told her softly, our foreheads pressed together.

“I love you so much.” She whispered.

“I love you too.” I replied, pulling her close. “And soon, you’ll be mine forever.” She smiled and kissed me, the kiss deep and passionate. I wanted to stay right there in that moment forever. It was so perfect and everything felt right.

The others began to drink, but Haylee and I didn’t. We slipped out of the room and headed to her room. “I want to talk to you.” She whispered.

“What is it, doll?” I asked, sitting down on the edge of the bed with her.

“I’m sorry…” she spoke, her voice beginning to break. “I don’t want to do this anymore, Dan. I want to admit that I have a problem. I’m depressed and I need you and Phil and everyone to get over it. I don’t want to be like this anymore! It’s time for me to stop being so ignorant about it.”

I pulled her into a hug, sighing with relief. “We can do this, love.” I smiled. “You know, that’s not what I thought was going to happen.” I whispered.

“You thought I was going to break up with you, didn’t you?” she asked. I nodded and she took my hand. “I wouldn’t do that. I love you, Dan.”

“I know; I’m sorry sweetheart. Now, let’s go back to the party, hmm?” I wrapped my arm around her waist and led her back to the lounge where we’d been partying. Another dance party had commenced. The music was loud and somehow we had disco lights everywhere. I didn’t know where he’d gotten these, but it was pretty cool. We danced and partied for a little while longer until everyone started to go home.

That night, Haylee fell asleep in my room. I didn’t mind; I knew right now she needed me more than ever. I wrapped her in my arms and pulled the duvet tighter around us. She shivered and curled up against me to get warm. I sighed and kissed the top of her head. She whimpered and drifted off to sleep.

Haylee’s POV

“YOU’RE NEVER GOING TO BE GOOD FOR ANYTHING!” My father shouted at my mom again, causing me to cower in the corner of the hallway. If he saw me, he’d probably just hit me.

“I HATE YOU! MY MOTHER WAS RIGHT! I NEVER SHOULD HAVE MARRIED YOU!” My mom shouted back, backing away slowly. This had been going on as long as I could remember and it usually happened every day. I sobbed quietly, trying not to let him hear me.

“SHUT UP, YOU LAZY IDIOT! YOU NEVER DO ANYTHING AROUND HERE!” He screamed back at her. I stood up; finally ready to take my stand.
