Ally's pov

This case had been kicking our ass. It had been a week, and we had no leads. Her neighbors didn't know her. She didn't have a job yet, so no coworkers. The last place she was seen was at a krogers. She was still reserved and quiet but there were some moments when she let down her guard. I got to see how vulnerable she was and so far I could really see a future with this woman. She was so goofy and caring. I have to forget about Normani. It will never happen. The sooner I realize that, the less it will hurt in the future. My phone rang and I checked the caller ID. Oh great. It was my mom.

Me: Hey mom.

Patricia: Hey Ally. We are having dinner with the Hansen's tonight so dress nice. Love you.

She hung up the phone. Well I guess I will be hanging out with Dinah tonight. I smiled.

I saw Dinah pull up to my house from my window. I was so nervous. My mom didn't tell me why this was happening. I walked out of my house and locked the door before Dinah could make it to my front door.

"Howdy partner." I said before pulling her into a hug. She squeezed me which caused me to relax a little bit.

She released me. "Hey Ally! Shall we?" She held her hand out for me. I grabbed it, and we entered the car.

I didn't notice how quiet the ride was until Dinah asked "Are you nervous about seeing our parents?"

"Yeah. A little bit." I admitted.

"I am too. I mean we've done this before but usually they aren't cryptic on the phone like that. Do you think that we are in trouble?"

"No, as far as I know, we both still plan on getting married right?"

"Yes." She said with no hesitation.

I nodded in agreement. We arrived and Dinah opened the car door for me. She hesitated before knocking, and I grabbed her hand to give her a reassuring squeeze. She squeezed my hand back before knocking on the door.

"Dinah! and Ally?" Mrs. Hansen exclaimed once she opened the door to see who was on the other side. I guessed no one knew we were coming together. Dinah lets go of my hand to greet her mom. I hugged Mrs. Hansen as well. She invited us in. Her and Dinah headed to the kitchen while I walked further into the house to find my parents. They were sitting on the couch watching Jeopardy.

"This poem was written by NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson in 1900. It became a song and is now known as 'the black national anthem'." Alex Trebek said.

"What is a swing low sweet chariot?" my mom said proudly like a dumbass.

"Lift every voice and sing." I corrected her.

"Ally!" Both of my parents yelled as they jumped up from the couch and hugged me.

"Hi mom. Hi dad." I hugged them back.

"Food is ready!" Mrs. Hansen yelled. We all walked into the dining room to have a seat. Dinah was already there. She pulled out the seat beside her and thanked her as I sat down. She nodded and sat too.

After we ate, Mr. Hansen tapped his fork against his glass to get our attention. Dinah's hand slid into mine, and I was glad to take it. "I know you two are wondering why you are here." We both nodded. "Well I am going to run for mayor next year. The parents have discussed at length and we've decided that your wedding will be in six months."

I was shocked. I went to protest, but I heard Dinah say, "okay." I looked at her, and she shrugged her shoulders. "They've already talked about it. There's nothing we can do about it now."
