Dinah's pov

The chief wanted to see me. I rolled out of bed and got dressed quickly. He was never that short with me; unless I was in trouble. I drove to the department as fast as I could without breaking any laws. I knocked on his door and he let me in almost immediately. "You wanted to see me, Chief?"

"Yes, have a seat." I followed directions. "As you know my daughter is the district attorney. They are having an auction in a couple of months, and she asked me to nominate some detectives for it."

"Okay, well it's a no from my boss." I answered honestly.

The chief gasped. "It's for charity. You can't say no to charity unless you are an asshole. Are you an asshole Hansen?"

"If it gets me out of being in the auction then yes sir. I am." I stood up.

"Too late. I already sent her the list of names. I can't take your name off now. That would make you seem like someone who does not commit to things that they agreed to. My hands are tied." He shrugged.

"Chief, you didn't ask me though. You know I hate being in the spotlight." I sighed in defeat. It was pointless to argue with the Chief. What he said goes. We eat breakfast together every Saturday together. You think that I would know better, but I had to try. "What is the prize for when someone purchases me?"

"It's just a dance." He popped a peppermint into his mouth.

"Oh okay, I can do that. You really couldn't have told me this over the phone?" I looked at my phone.

"Nope, I just wanted to see your face when I told you. You are free to go." He gave me a toothy grin.

"I hope you were satisfied. See you later." I got up and went to my office. I sat in my chair and twirled around. This was unbelievable. He couldn't force me to do this. I slouched in my chair with my arms folded.

"Wow. Who ruffled your feathers this morning?" Lauren said.

"Chief is making me do an auction." I groaned.

"Yeah. If it makes you feel any better, I have to do it too. I don't mind because I'm definitely going to be worth more than you." She punched my shoulder.

"Bet." My tummy growled, and I realized that I skipped breakfast rushing to get here. I needed coffee as well. I pulled out my phone to thank Ally for last night.

To Ally: thanks for letting me stay. I had a great time. Sorry I rushed out. The chief wanted to see me.

Ally: No problem at all. I had fun too. We will have to hangout more often before we are married. I brought you breakfast if you're hungry.

Dinah: Agreed. You are a lifesaver. I'm on my way down to you. See you in a few.

I smiled and put my phone in my pocket, remembering the events of last night.

"What's got you grinning like an idiot?" Lauren asked from her desk.

"Nothing just Ally. We kind of hung out last night." I blushed.

She stood up. "Wait. What? You and Dr. Hernandez?" I nodded. "How did this happen? What did y'all do? I want details."

I gave a very excited Lauren a summary of what happened yesterday.

"Oh this is great Dinah! I'm so happy for you. Wait. What happened to the 'sixty eight and counting steps to woo my future wife' plan?" She pulled out a notebook from my desk. "You skipped to-" she turned a couple of pages. "Step twenty. I didn't think we were ever going to leave step three. Which was 'Say hi.' " She looked up from the notebook.
