"Bucky."
"What?"
"Bucky, Bucky, Bucky."
"Why are you saying that name?"
"It's a name? That's a funny name."
"Sophie?"
"Yes, Stevie?" I looked up at my father figure.
"Did you forget again?" I paused at his words, before meeting his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"No, it's okay." He placed a hand on my shoulder, gently squeezing.
"Who is Bucky?" I asked.
"He's a soldier, a good man, my best friend actually."
"Can I meet him?" I grew excited at the thought.
"He...I'm afraid not."
"Why?" I frowned.
"Because he's not here."
"Oh. Is he gonna come over?"
"No, sweetie."
"Why not?"
"Because he's busy."
I paused for a moment, playing with the tags around my neck, before looking down and reading them. "Barnes. What a funny name," I looked up, "Oh, hi Stevie." I ran to him, giving him a tight hug, before running back to my toys, my hands clutching the tags close. "Hi sweetie."
----------
"Stevie!" I smiled, running at him as he arrived, and he opened his arms, picking me up as I reached him. "What are you doing here?"
"I forgot, I'm sorry."
"That's okay, I'll go speak to Tony about it. How about you sit with Sam for a min.."
"Sam?" I looked over his shoulder, before something hazy came back, "birdy!"
"Hey there, Cadet."
"You always say such funny things." I giggled, before squirming from Steve's grasp and running towards him. The two adults looked at one another, before walking separate ways, Sam grabbing my hand and taking me towards some seats.
"What's that noise?"
"Stay here." Sam pointed at the chair, "do not move."
"Okay. Stay here. Don't move. Stay here. Don't mo.." my eyes caught sight of a flashing light in the hall, and I stared at it, the red bringing fear. "Stevie?" I looked around, then down at the chair I sat on. Something told me I had to stay, but the more I looked around, the more the panic grew. "Steve?!"
"You alright, sweetheart?" An agent placed a hand on my shoulder, but I reacted fast.
"Go away! I want Steve!" I stomped on his foot, before bolting in the opposite direction, ignoring the shouts that followed.
And then, I crashed into someone. I looked up, and suddenly everything became clear again, "Bucky?" I titled my head and he met my eyes.
"Recruit?"
"Bucky!" I removed closer, wrapping my arms around his waist, feeling cool metal against my back, a feeling that brought a comfort I didn't know I needed. "There!"
"Alright, up we go." I felt my body being lifted from the ground, giggling as we ran away from the others, Bucky holding me tight as he ran.
------------
"He remembers you, he always has." I looked at Steve, unsure. It had been so long since I'd seen my hero, the soldier created in the depths of hell. "And if he doesn't?"
"Then we'll be right with you." I looked away in thought, before shaking my head.
"No, I have to go in alone."
"You sure?"
"Yeah, he's Bucky, he won't hurt me." I walked towards the room, before taking a deep breath, feeling haziness seeping in.
"Soph?"
"I'm alright." I shook it off, entering the room before I could forget why I was here.
"Bucky?" I spoke quietly as I looked over at the man, chained to a chair, Stark's devices keeping him weak enough to prevent a breakout. "Bucky, I don't know how long I have so I need you to talk to me." I pleaded, walking closer.
"That's close enough."
I glared at the camera above, before ignoring the instruction and continuing on. "Just look at me, it's the least you can do."
"Who are you?" His voice broke as he spoke, and I sighed, kneeling in front of him and placing my hands over his, feeling the way he tended.
"It's me, Hero."
"Recruit?" He finally looked up.
"Yeah."
"You're...you're so big." He smiled, and I held back sad tears.
"I'm sixteen, and, I haven't forgotten you."
"Your memory still goes?"
"Yeah...it's a work in progress."
There it came again, the haziness, and I found my eyes focusing on the metal hand that moved to hold mine with it's limited allowance. "Look at me, Sophie." I did as he said, "you're gonna be okay."
"Why are we here?" I looked around the room, confused, before meeting Bucky's eyes. I knew that look.
"Dammit!" I kicked the nearby table in anger, warning an amused chuckle from the man.
"You know, it's not the table's fault?" At the sound of his hoarse voice I looked over, taking in his weak form.
"Bucky?"
"Yeah, Recruit?"
"Where are we?"
"SHIELD I think."
"You think?!"
"Hey! It's not them, okay? Just breathe."
"I'm getting you out of here."
"Step away from the prisoner, now."
"No, fuck you!" I tugged at the chains.
"Stop."
"No!"
"Stop, now."
"No! I'm not going to stop, not until I get you out of here."
"Sophie!" The door crashed open and I looked back, "step away."
"No. He's the only family I have, Sam, I can't just leave him."
