Chapter 4 (Life Changing Decisions)

After a very long tiring morning, Jay and Hailey are sat on the front of there car having a break and just talking, when Jay suddenly asks "so, are you going to tell me what's going on?". Hailey looks down at the floor and hesitates but then answers her partner "I'm thinking of adopting her".

Jay then looks at her with his eyes widened he then asks "you want to adopt Luciana?", Hailey nods her head and answers "yea, tell me it's not a stupid idea Jay, please". Jay then replies back fairly quickly "hey, now stop, it's not stupid, it's amazing, it's a huge thing yes, but it's such a lovely thing to do". Hailey looks him in the eyes and replies "yea".

2 hours later

"Hey, so I have a question for you" Hailey says to Lucie as she sits on the chair yet again, beside the bed, the young girl looks up in worry and replies "w, what I do". Hailey smiles and replies back reassuringly "nothing, you haven't done anything, I just wanted to run something by you, see what you think". The young girl nods her head at Hailey and waits to hear the question.

"So, so I was thinking, I mean if you wanted, what would you say about me adopting you?" Hailey asks awkwardly. The young girl looks at her confused and says "dopted?" Hailey smiles and replies "adopted, in other words, I become your mom", the young girls eyes widens as she hears them words.

"Y, you, be, m, m, mommy" the girl stutters out, Hailey nods her head and asks "so what do you think?", Luciana smiles and nods her head in excitement and she hugs Hailey, well I say hug , practically dives into her arms "yes, I, I love, you to be, my mommy" she stutters back a verbal answer. Hailey smiles and she kisses the girl who hopefully is her soon to be daughter.

2 hours later

Hailey walks up the stairs and blurts out as soon as she gets to the unit "I have an announcement to make", everyone in the room looks at her, Hank even comes to the door and waits to hear Hailey announcement. Hailey then takes a deep breath in and out, she looks over at Jay who gives her a reassuring nod.

"I am going to try and adopt Lucie" Hailey blurts out to everyone in the room, Kim smiles widely and replies back in a happy mood "that's brilliant news, I'm happy for you hun". Ruzek also replies back "yes, that is, good news, looks like the kid can finally catch a break", Hailey nodded her head and hugged Kim and Adam.

Antonio walked towards her and safed her "good on ya" he says, Kevin also comes over to her and hugs her "this is so nice to hear, she couldn't have a better person at her side". Hailey thanks them all and then she walks over to her Sargent who smiles at her, he doesn't say anything for a moment, he hugs her and then just stands there in silence "anything you need, just ask, we are all here for you, Lucie is now family" he finally says.

"Thank you sarge, there is one thing" Hailey says, Hank then replies "name it", Hailey then says "well, if this goes well, and they approve me... I'm going to need some time of work, jusr until i can get her settled in and sort things out". Hank nods his head and smiles proudly, he then replies back "consider it done, you just let me know okay?", Hailey thanks him and leaves the office.

Hailey doesn't waste anytime and since it's out in the open she heads straight downstairs, as she is abouts to leave she hears Sargent Platt call her name, she turns around and looks at her "yes sarge". Trudy smiles and then says "Burgess told me, I'm sure it will all go to plan, what your doing is really sweet of you", Hailey nods her head and thanks her, she then leave the station and gets in her car.

1 hour later

"So let's get this straight, what your saying is, you want to adopt Luciana May Mendez, the girl you just saved a few days ago?" the man in a very formal suit asks, Hailey nods her head "yes, that's exactly what I am saying" she says. He nods and then says sternly "I'm sure you know that it's not as simple as signing papers, a lot goes into these things".

Hailey then replies "I know, I just don't want anything to happen to her, I want her to feel safe, she won't be safe if she's in a orphanage", the man paces back and fourth and then nods his head "very well, I will arrange for a social worker to come and look through your apartment to make sure it's child safe". Hailey nods her head and thanks the man as she shakes his hand.

When she gets outside she heads back to her car and drives of to a shop to get some things, she knew it wouldn't be cheap but it was worth it, she was worth it, every penny. At the end of her shopping spree she had all the important things a kid needed, she then went over to the toy section and picked up a few toys that she thought the girl would like.

After she makes the purchases and selected a time and date for delivery she headed on back out and got in her car, then she drove to a pizza place and ordered 2 small chicago pizzas with extra pepperoni. When she has then in her hand she puts them back in her car and drives back to the hospital to be with Lucie until Hailey was told she had to leave.

"Hey there sweetie, everything ok?" Hailey asks as she walks in the hospital room, Lucie nods her head, Hailey then places the pizza box on the girls tray and Hailey opens hers and takes a slice out and begins to eat. Hailey munched on her pepperoni pizza but she kept her eyes on the girl who hadn't yet touched hers.

After Haileys second slice she looks down at the girl and asks "why ain't you eating?", the young girl looks at the pizza box and stutters "m, m, mine?", Hailey smiles and answers the confused girl "oh, yes sweetheart, it's your pizza, I've got mine, eat it up, I bet your hungry, hospital food has never been 5 star".

The young girl then opens the box and begins to stuff the pizza slices down her mouth, she ate it as fast as lightning, just then Hailey realised how mistreated the girl had been, she couldn't even eat unless she was told she could, poor girl probably hadn't even tried a pizza before.
