This is it. I'm gonna die.
The old drunk man tightened his grip.
"You don't have anyone accompanying you, don't you, sweetheart?"
His breath smells so bad. It reeks of alcohol and cigarettes, it makes me want to vomit. My eyes water, and my blood boils. I opened my mouth to answer.
"Fu-"
"She's with me, now get your fucking hands off of her."
A voice that spoke so coldly sent shivers down my spine. I never felt so relieved to hear him in my entire life.
Brett.
If those words were directed at me, I'd be so scared. But I guess the homeless man wasn't least intimidated by Brett as he pulls me behind him, making himself a barrier between the drunk man and I. I clutch the sleeve of his hoodie, my heart beating fast as gratitude washes over me.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing?"
Brett's cold voice echoed throughout the silent neighbourhood. It's a first that Brett swore.
"Nice girlfriend you got there, I was just playing with her," the man cackles as Brett pushes his shoulder.
"You're being a perv, old man. Back off!"
The man retreats but then raised his fist, and it collided against Brett's face.
"How'd you like that punch? I told you we were just playing! Right, swe-"
He wasn't able to continue his sentences when the boy I thought was this silent, innocent guy, punched the man back. I inwardly cringed as I hear his nose crack.
"Fuck you, man! What's wrong with you? You punch like a baby!"
"Fuck, Brett, that's enough, let's go," I say as I pull him back. He lets me. I grab his arm as a flashlight was directed at us.
"What's with all the commotion here?"
An officer flashed his light at us. "Ask that pervert right there," Brett says breathlessly. He was breathing heavily, something that I haven't seen before.
The officer sighs. "I've had enough of you, old man. You've caused too much trouble the past week. Come with me. We're gonna have a little chit chat," he says as he grabs the babbling man, screaming about how Brett was 'too bitchy and rude to share his girlfriend' even though I wasn't his girlfriend. He was cursing so much that I had to cover my ears for a second.
"Off you go, kids. It's late, plus an accident happened nearby, wouldn't want you getting caught in there too," the officer said and walked the opposite direction, grabbing the homeless man, obviously drunk, along with him. He was still screaming profanities at us, though.
So an accident happened, huh? Probably would be broadcasted all over the news tomorrow. But I couldn't really care less. All I could think about was how Brett saved my life. Again.
He and I stand in silence, watching them go out of sight. His heavy breathing was the only sound I could hear.
"Brett, I-"
He doesn't let me finish, he just grabs my hand and we start walking in a fast pace. I don't know where we're going, but we're going.
"Where are w-"
