It was late. The street lights were lit, the sky dark with moody grey clouds. Candice sat on the hood of her car with her right leg shaking. A car flashed her with their headlights before turning out the circle of the fast food drive through. A small minivan pulled up next to her and her heart skipped a beat. Spooky better known now as Oscar climbed out. Candice hopped off the hood and caught a glimpse of the car seat in the back of the car.
"Hey," Oscar said digging he hands into his pants pockets. Candice bit the inside of her cheek to keep from crying. What would she say? What does one say? It's been two years since they last seen each other and they left on muddy terms. That didn't stop him from getting engaged and having a baby, Candice thought.
"It's good to see you," she said. Oscar put the van in park and climbed out.
"You look good," Oscar said. He looked so different. He grew his hair out and his mustache was thicker. Candice liked to think that she had changed too. She cut her hair into a pixie cut, sported a sports car, had her own place, and finally published her first book.
"You too...how's the new life?" Candice flinched as the words came out. She didn't want to know. She didn't want to know how he was preparing to welcome his new bundle of joy into the world when she was childless. She didn't want to know how he and his fiancé were excited about having their wedding and planning to move out the neighborhood. All she wanted to hear was—
"It's good. Trying to get Cesar out of the streets," Oscar confessed. Candice nodded her head and Oscar pointed to his van.
"I got a new whip, I'm attracting soccer moms now," Oscar said. Candice let her laugh break free and Oscar joined her. The tension eased.
"It was good to see you," Candice smiled. Oscar held out his arms and Candice stayed put.
"I don't think that's a good idea," She said. Oscar grabbed her hands and pulled her into him anyway. They swayed in the middle of the street holding each other tight.
"I love you," Oscar said into her hair. Candice sighed and pulled away.
"I'll always have love for you," she laughed. Oscar walked to his van and hopped in the driver's seat.
"When you want to trade cars let me know," Oscar joked. Candice flipped him the bird.
"No, thank you!" She said. Oscar pulled off down the street and Candice watched until his taillights disappeared around the corner. They weren't kids anymore and Candice was glad to have had his love even if it was only for a moment. Candice flirted with the thought of writing a book based on their old relationship on her way to her car.
"It would be a best seller, for sure," she said to herself before hopping inside. She started to put the gear into drive when her phone rang. It was an unknown number.
"Hello?"
"Candice!?! It's Monse! I'm back in town! Do you still live here? I read your book and it was great! Would it be wrong to ask for your autograph?" Monse went on and on. Candice drove to her new home outside of Freeridge listening to Monse drone in her ear.
