Despite Candice's many attempts to persuade Mrs. Paulson it didn't work. Mrs. Paulson parked her car off to the side and joined Candice on the bench.
"What are you doing Candice?" She asked. Candice leaned up and adjusted her T-shirt so her small bump couldn't be seen.
"I'm on my way to my grandma's house," she lied. Mrs. Paulson nodded her head.
"Ok, I'll wait with you." Internally, Candice groaned. Why couldn't Mrs. Paulson just mind her business like everyone else who drove pass her. Candice arched her back and a twinge of pain surged just as the baby kicked.
"Ah ow," Candice hissed grabbing her back. Mrs. Paulson looked at her and smiled tightly.
"How far along are you?" She asked. Candice raised an eyebrow skeptically.
"I'm not pregnant—."
"And I'm not a mother of four," Mrs. Paulson laughed. Candice sighed.
"I'm 8 months," she admitted. Mrs. Paulson sized her up in disbelief.
"There's no way," Mrs. Paulson said and then collected herself, "Are you really going to your grandmothers house?"
Candice didn't want to tell the truth because then Mrs. Paulson would have to report her and her family to CPS. Candice nodded and wiped away a tear.
"I can drive you," Mrs. Paulson said touching Candice's shoulder lightly. Candice shook her off and shook her head.
"No uh she told me to wait here and not to move." She knew Candice was lying so she stood.
"See you in class tomorrow?" Mrs. Paulson asked.
"Yes."***
When Candice woke up she was laying in a bed. Frightened she cautiously rose up to inspect her surroundings.
"Candice," the voice came from in the corner. Oscar leaned on the wall with his arms crossed. Candice relaxed and relieved. Her things were on the side of the bed. Oscar walked over and sat by her feet. He rubbed her legs which felt good considering they were a little swollen.
"How did you find me?" She asked laying back down on the bed.
"I drove by and nearly lost my shit," Oscar chuckled. The baby rolled and kicked Candice causing her to suck in a tight breath.
"Yeah, you hear daddy?" Candice winced as the baby pressed around her organs. She cradled her stomach and winced again. Oscar put his ear to her stomach.
"Look here little boy...stop hurting mama," Oscar chuckled. He kissed her stomach and rose up again.
"Where are you going?" She asked.
"I need to handle some business I'll be back," he said. Candice winced again and nodded. Oscar walked over and grabbed her face.
"Get some sleep," he said before pecking her lips. Candice nodded and laid back down.
