Monse: Hey Candice...I know we haven't talked in a while since Olivia's party but I wanted to tell you that Ruby is having a New Years Ever party at his house. We all miss you.
Candice closed her phone and held her breath. Between the twigs in the bushes she could make out the yellow and green clothes of the prophets.
"Man nigga, I swear she ran around here," the one boy said. Candice whimpered as she held her ribs. The two boys looked around in the dark for her.
"Niko, she ain't here," one of them yelled. Niko, the light skinned one with two cornrows going straight back, sucked his teeth.
"Man she is here--" he was cut off by the sound of her phone ringing.
"Fuck," she whimpered. Her arms shook as she tried to hoist herself up off the ground. Candice stumbled to her feet and fought her way out of the bushes. She ran in the back of someones house and hopped their small fence. The two guys were right behind her. A dog barked somewhere around her and nipped at her ankle. She jumped and groaned when her body met the cement wall next to the alley. She threw herself over and ran. The guys howls could be heard as they tried to get away from the small dog. The streets were barely lit with the exception of a small memorial in front of a familiar gate. Candice stopped and looked inside. The gang were all inside in a circle and Ruby stood on a table. Candice let a small smile snake across her face.
"You look horrible," came from behind her. Candice whipped around and clutched her side in pain. Cesar stood behind her and smiled sheepishly. Candice held her hands up and shook her head.
"I don't want any problems Cesar," she said. Cesar laughed and shrugged his shoulders.
"Candice, I'm not mad at you," Cesar said taking a step forward. Candice took a step back and winced. Cesar frowned looking pass Candice making Candice turn around. Ruby moved from the table and was making his way to the door. Candice took off up the street. Her bare feet numbly slapped the pavement. When she cut the corner she caught the eye of some Santo's walking up the street.
"Fuck!" She said to herself. She tore down the street with the last of her energy. There was a truck parked in front of one of the houses. Candice flew down, scrapping the palms of her hands, and slid under the car. She watched the white and black shoes run by her. Her abdomen felt damp and she checked it with her hand. When it came back up there was blood, which meant her wound had torn open again.
When she made it back to her grandmothers house all she could do was lay in the corner, of the porch, by a large plant. Her skin burned where her wound was and she whimpered. Her grandmother left out early for New Year's Eve bingo. Candice checked her clock and it was 12:20.
"Happy new year Candice," she muttered to herself before dozing off to sleep.
