Candice's eyes flung open as she felt a hand sliding up her inner thigh. She jolted up and the hand rested by her ankle. The smell of mildew and beer rose to her nose. She kicked the hand away but it came back sliding up her leg and tugging on the edge of her oversized t-shirt. She tried to roll out of the bed but struggled.
"Lay your ass back down!" She was pushed back. Candice fought as the large body climbed over her. Craig leaned down to her ear and whispered something but Candice didn't catch it. As he lifted up her shirt she reached over to her dresser, grabbed her glass soda bottle, and bashed it over his head. Craig howled and fell to the floor. Candice pushed herself up, belly first, and hobbled to her door. She stopped in her tracks when she saw her mother standing outside in the hallway. Craig came out behind her in a fury but straightened up upon seeing her mom.
"Babe...she forced herself on me," he said raising his hands. Candice looked down at her feet. Her mom looked between the two of them and then relaxed her gaze on Candice.
"Pack your things," her mom snapped. Candice celebrated in her. Craig sucked his teeth and pushed pass Candice.
"C'mon man don't do that—," he whined.
"I'm not talking to you," her mother said coldly. Candice looked up in disbelief with tears in her eyes.
"W-What?" Candice whimpered. Her mother walked up to her until they were almost chest to chest. Candice shook her head.
"Now, pack your things and get out," her mother said again but this time there was something different in her eyes. Candice went to her room, grabbed her hospital bag with all of her baby stuff in it and then filled one of her duffel bags with her things. She slipped on a jean jacket, sweatpants, and slides before leaving out.Candice found herself sitting on a bus stop bench. It was a warm night and for that she was thankful. Although her circumstances weren't great, at the moment, the only thing she could think about was her test in English. The baby kicked and Candice winced as she tried to make herself comfortable. The street light flickered on the corner and she noticed headlights coming down the street. She looked down and pretended to look somewhat stoic or homeless. Which she was. The car rolled to a stop in front of her.
"Candice?" She looked up and raised an eyebrow. Her teacher Mrs. Paulson was leaning out the window. Candice waved and Mrs. Paulson put her car in park with the hazard lights on. She jogged over and worry was written across her freckled face.
"Are you ok?"
