"You look ugly as fuck," Craig laughed. He was seated on his normal spot on the couch. He pressed a dutch between his lips and breathed in. Candice had came back home from school to change into her costume. She wore a cute black body suit, cat ears, a fake tail, and flats. She tried to ignore his banters and fixed her hair. She had pulled her old pixie wig from the closet and tucked her, cornrowed, hair in. She ran her dark berry lipstick over her lips and frowned. No, I look great and sexy. She mentally gave Craig the middle finger and turned around. Her mom was actually home and writing at the table.
"You look amazing baby!" Her mom squealed.
"Thanks mom." Candice smiled and grabbed her purse. She was headed to Ruby's house for their traditional shut in.
"I sent Munchie to look for you yesterday...he said he couldn't find you," Craig said blowing out smoke.
"Why did you send someone to find me I was at school," Candice spat. Craig leaned up and stared at her.
"You better—."
"We need you to go visit Latrelle in juvie," Candice mom said. She pushed her pink reading glasses on top of her head revealing big brown eyes. Candice and her mother favored but were nothing alike. They both had brown eyes, beautiful brown skin, round faces, and nice nose. Candice rolled her eyes and walked out the door.
Mrs. Terrell sat on her porch next to a big bucket of candy. Pink rollers sat in her hair and a lip cigarette in her mouth.
"Hi Mrs. Terrell," Candice waved. Mrs. Terrell waved back with a wide smile. I wonder where Mr. Terrell is. Candice put in her headphones and started her trek to Ruby's. The neighbors homes were decorated with pumpkins and candy bowls. Candice remembered the time she went trick or treating in freshman year and had to run because someone was doing a drive by.
"Brentwood here we come!" Jamal sung hopping down the porch steps. He had on a patients gown and a sling. Monse dressed as a lifeguard in her red hoodie and shorts. Cesar was well Cesar, Olivia dressed as a cowgirl, and Ruby dressed as a vampire.
"CANDICE!" They yelled when Candice crossed the street. Candice jogged over. An old woman in the drivers seat of a wagon smiled.
"Everyone get in the car," she said. Candice hurried up and hopped in.
"And who are you?" The tiny woman asked.
"Oh abuela, this is my friend Candice. Candice this is my grandma," Ruby said.
"Nice to meet you," Candice said nodding her head. Olivia reached across Monse, Ruby, and Cesar to slap Candice on the leg.
"You look great," she said.
"Everyone looks good," Candice said.
"Well, not everyone," Ruby secretly pointed to Monse and everyone laughed.

Brentwood was thirty minutes away and very different from home. The white families roamed freely house to house gathering large candy bars and running about. They were standing on the side walk.
"On fourth thought we're good," Monse and Jamal stormed off down the street. Candice looked at Olivia and shrugged her shoulders.
"I guess we'll be a group of four," she said. They went house to house collecting candy bar after candy bar until they came across a house party. Candice looked at all the white kids partying and tensed up.
"Woohoo, cat woman!" One guy shouted as they walked in.
"This is awesome!" Ruby shouted. Candice walked towards what looked like a self serve candy table. They had all kinds of candy but a small bag labeled Godiva caught her attention.
"Whaaaaat," She said mostly to herself while stuffing her bag with the colorful wrapped chocolate truffles. This is ridiculous. People gathered behind her and Candice turned around.
"That's my mother's juice," a guy said to Olivia. Candice shoved her way through the crowd and to her friends. Olivia was pouring the orange drink onto the carpet. The guy walked away slowly.
"We gotta get out of here!" Candice yelled pulling everyone towards the door.
"Nothings going to happen, trust me," Ruby smiled confidently. The guy returned with two cartons of eggs. Candice tore down the front steps and out the door.
"Come on!" She hollered. Even though they were being ambushed with eggs Candice smiled. Cesar, Ruby, and Olivia followed behind her screaming. Racing down the street Candice recognized the pair walking towards them.
"Run come on!" Candice yelled still running. She flew by Monse and Jamal who were looking around bewildered. Soon, they too were running. Before they knew it they had ran across town and to Ruby's house.
"What was Cesar saying about something being handled?" Candice asked sucking on a raspberry jolly rancher. Ruby looked at Jamal and Jamal shook his head.
"He meant nothing," Ruby said, "pass me a Mr. Good bar would you?"
Candice reached in the pile and handed over the yellow chocolate bar. Candice leaned back and rested her head on the couch. They can never do their adult duties. They always send me to handle shit. I can't believe mom, she's the one who allowed Craig to get all in Latrelle's head about being in a gang. If anything were to seriously happen to Latrelle I would never forgive them...I just can't wait to leave this place!
"Hey, I can walk you home if you'd like," a soft hand touched Candice's shoulder. She looked up and Cesar stared back down at her. Something about Cesar made him look familiar.
"I thought Oscar was coming to pick you up Cesar?" Jamal asked. Candice really rose up like the dead then. Her heart raced in her chest and the candy bile rose up her throat. Oscar? He's out of jail? How does Cesar know Oscar? Her mind was racing so fast.
"No, I'll walk." Candice stood up, leaving her candy, and fled for home. Oscar, how the fuck did he get out so soon? The night became cool and she crossed her arms. Knowing Oscar was free was chilling to the bone. Wait one damn minute! The other day those santos on the porch...Spooky? Oh fuck how could I be so stupid! Spooky was Oscars street name.
