*A couple months later*
Candice blew on her nails and waited on Monse's porch. It was 6:45 at night an hour past the time Monse and her were supposed to meet up. Candice no longer had a green light over top of her head and she was freely able to attend community college. She was still dealing with her family issues. Both Craig and Latrell were locked up due to everything that went down a few months ago. She didn't like the idea and when she heard how the set up happened she wasn't too happy. She hadn't spoken to Spooky in months and not because she doesn't see him. They run into each in passing as she's walking to the community college or to Monse's house. In the flip side to the bad the good news was that her grandma was free of cancer and back to hassling people down at the bingo hall. Candice checked her wrist and again and sighed.
"Where is Monse at?" Just as she stood up from Monse's porch she heard screeching tires.
"Ay! You saw me backing out of my driveway!" A woman yelled. Another car had T-boned the side of her car.
"I can't wait any longer I have homework," Candice hopped off the porch and began her walk home. While she was grateful to be able to finally graduate and start community college she couldn't help but wonder where she went wrong. When are you going to publish that book? You sitting on millions! Candice chuckled remembering her grandmothers words. She hadn't touched her notebook in months but wrote a series of one page short stories. Candice thought about it all the way to her home where her grandma was sitting on the porch with a bag of sunflower seeds.
"Hey grandma!" Candice hugged her and sat next to her on the bench.
"Hey baby, it's hot out here. I'm about to take this damn wig off and sling it in the corner," her grandma said spatting out shells into a paper towel. Candice cringed.
"What you do today?" Candice asked.
"Talked to Mr. Issacs across the street over there to tell him I need my pipes fixed," Grandma looked over her glasses at Candice. Candice paused and chuckled.
"What?"
"At around 4:30 tomorrow, Imma need you to do your homework up at the library or something so I can have my me time with Mr.—,"
"Ew, ok I get the point grandma," Candice stood shaking away the mental images.
"This my damn house," Candice ran in the house before she could hear anymore of grandma's rambling. She jogged up the steps and into her room closing the door behind her. She pulled her shirt off and tossed it in her hamper. She walked over to her small vanity and touched the pictures that were taped to the corners.
"That's a cute kid you have there," Candice jumped and turned around. The air caught in her throat, Candice stared back at a beautiful middle aged woman with red nails, a high bun, and a navy pantsuit. The woman walked from the corner of the room and sat down on Candice's bed.
"Come sit with me," she patted the space next to her and Candice reluctantly did what she was told. The woman tucked one of Candice's braids behind her ear and smiled.
"Sorry my men couldn't get to you earlier like your other friends so I had to come in person," she said. Candice was still trying to remember how to breathe.
"Who are you?" Candice managed.
"Me? Oh I am Cuchillo and I need your help darling."
