Candice tried to mentally detach herself from the present moment. Her grandmother leaned over the bed hurling into the bucket. With each upchuck Candice felt the contents plop into the bucket followed by the rancid smell. It made her stomach turn but she had to be strong for her grandmother.
"I'm sorry Candice, you can leave the bucket on the floor," her grandmother coughed. Candice wanted to toss the bucket out the window and run out. That wouldn't be right.
"It's ok, just drink your water," Candice placed the bucket aside and stood.
"You know your mother hasn't called me once?" Her grandmother said bitterly. Candice rolled her eyes and scoffed.
"Sounds about right—."
"But it's wrong!" Her grandmother snapped, "Our relationship should not be estranged." Candice winced. It shouldn't be but she hated to remind herself of the reality. They had a shitty crumbling family dynamic. Her brother couldn't come home as often as he should, her mom was aloof, and Candice was stuck helping her grandmother.
"It's ok, just get some sleep...for me?" Candice asked crossing her arms. Her grandmother gave a weak smile. She was so sick that she could barely get out of bed and put on her wig. It didn't take long for her to fall asleep. She took her medicine that would at least knock her out for 3-4 hours. That gave Candice enough time to relax. Candice grabbed the bucket, a pair of disposable gloves, and headed to the bathroom.
"I hate this," she gagged pulling her shirt over her nose. She pulled the gloves on and dumped the waste down the toilet. The mixture was lumpy, foul, and reminded her of a tomato bisque she once had. That's how much blood her grandmother had been throwing up. Without thinking Candice grabbed the bleach cleaner and sprayed the inside of the toilet bowl and bucket. The buzzing of her phone startled her. Candice placed the bucket down and ditched the gloves.
"Hello?"
"Oh my gosh, you will not believe what happened at the baby shower?" Monse screamed into the phone. Candice winced and propped it between her shoulder and ear.
"Shit! That was today?" Candice looked out the window. It was night. How long had she been in the house helping her grandmother?
"Yes, and guess what! It wasn't Mario's baby! The baby was as black as you!" Monse howled.
"Wasn't the baby mama white?" Candice raised an eyebrow.
"YES!" Monse shouted. Candice shook her head and washed her hands. Her phone chirped and Candice looked at the caller I.D.
"Uh, Monse I got to call you back."Candice peeped around her hoodie to look both ways before crossing the street. Oscar sat on the porch with a beer in hand.
"Hey," she said. Oscar took a swig and looked up at her slowly.
"I'm trash?" He snapped. Candice pulled her hoodie down and shrugged.
"I don't know what you're talking about," she said. Oscar stood and peered down at her.
"You butt dialed me the other day. You told your little friend that I was trash," he hissed. Candice stumbled over her feet as Oscar dragged her inside by her arm.
"Oscar ow!" She whined. He tossed her onto the couch. He chuckled and unbuckled his pants.
"So, I'm trash?" He said again his voice deeper. Candice held her breath and her heart fluttered. Instinctively, she pulled down her sweatpants and positioned herself onto her back as he straddled her.
"N-no, I don't think—."
"That's right...don't think," Oscar groaned as he bent over her working himself into a rhythm. Candice allowed herself to relax and not think about anything beside this moment. She couldn't help the guilt of knowing that she openly said Oscar was trash; when he's the complete opposite. What was she going to say to Monse? Girl, you scored the younger brother, but I got the older one? No. Candice cried out as her thought was interrupted. Oscar kisses her and got up. She watched as he tucked himself back into his boxers and a twinge of panic arose.
"Where's the condom?" She blurted out. Oscar sighed and dangled it in her face.
"Why, wanna swallow it?" Oscar laughed. Candice scrunched up her nose.
"Freak," Candice giggled.
"Shid, you would've in the past," Oscar said walking into the kitchen. Candice pulled her underwear and pants up. Her back ached and as she stood she immediately dropped to the floor.
"Damn," she laughed. Oscar helped her up and chuckled.
"I'll take you home since you can't walk."Candice shuffled through the front door and headed up the stairs. It was almost 1 in the morning. She crept upstairs and walked into her grandmother's room. Her body sat unmoving with not even the slightest breath.
"Grandma!?!" Candice rushes to her grandmother's side. Her grandmother sat up with her wig on and a smile.
"You left me in here for a dick appointment?" Her grandmother laughed. Candice froze mouth wide open.
"You can close your mouth and you better not kiss me either," her grandmother snapped. Candice laughed and hugged her gently.
"Stop grandma," She chuckled. Her grandmother sniffed and pushed her away.
"You need to take a shower and go to bed. You got school in the morning."
