It's been a month since school started. Candice sat on the edge of her bed flipping through her notebook. The first page of the book was only  filled with a list of characters. There were approximately 98 pages left in her notebook, but did it matter?
"I'm going to buy a new notebook," she said aloud. Monse sucked her teeth from the small screen of Candice's phone.
"You just bought that yesterday," Monse exclaimed. Candice tossed the notebook aside and grabbed her phone. The two had been FaceTiming since 5:25 in the morning. Monse couldn't sleep and Candice was finishing a project. Something had changed in Monse. Last week, Monse told her that she would spending time with her mom. Candice was ecstatic and somewhat jealous. Who wouldn't want a stable parent? Candice couldn't help but feel that Monse wasn't Monse. Sure, she was still quick tongued, blunt, and overall Monse; however, her hair was straight most of the time, and the way she talked changed. Candice dismissed the thought and sighed.
"How are things holding up?" Monse chirped. Candice groaned and leaned back on the bed. For one her stomach had healed and it didn't seem like she had the green light on her anymore. Yesterday, she walked by a gang and no one said a word.
"Pretty good I guess, my grandma is having surgery next week. I may have to miss school for a week," Candice said. Monse frowned.
"What about your mom? Can't she help you with your grandmother?" Monse asked. Candice rolled her eyes. She hasn't seen her mom for a year and hears of Latrell sparingly.
"My mom is busy." Candice said leaning back up.
"Random, but, I think Jamal has gone off the rails again...and Ruby too." Monse scrunched up her nose and Candice chuckled.
"I can see Jamal, but why Ruby?" Candice pushes her feet into her slippers and stood to stretch.
"He hangs out with Spooky and I know that's Cesar's brother, but he's an a-hole of a brother," Monse snapped. Candice mugged Monse for a moment before fixing her face. Instead of going in and defending her boyfriend, Candice simply nodded her head.
"Yeah, he's trash."
