"Party at Monse's House!" Cesar yelled. Candice looked around nervously. The Santo guy was nowhere in sight. Maybe he was joking me? Candice undid her tight crown braid and shook out her hair into a braid out afro. Monse groaned beside her and hooked her arm onto Candice's.
"Why are you wearing that hoodie Monse?" Candice asked. Monse narrowed her eyes and let go of Candice's arm. Did I say something wrong? Olivia patted Candice on the back and smiled.
"Don't worry, she just had a hard time finding a sexy outfit... maybe we should have had you came over to help us pick something out," Olivia beamed. Candice pushed her lightly and paused. The balls of her feet were aching.
"Want is to wait for you?" Olivia asked. Candice shook her head.
"No, I'll meet y'all there." Candice limped over to a near by bench by the bus stop and untied her shoes. Small red indentations were left after the straps had unraveled from her ankles. It felt as though her feet were having a moment to breathe. She leaned back and sighed. Do I really want to go to this party or go home? Flashes of last nights fiasco snuck back into her memory. I'll just go to the party. Candice stood, heels in hand, and a black car slowly pulled up to the curb in front of her. She grabbed her purse and began heading in the direction of Monse's house. When the car turned off she relaxed a bit. I hate living in this neighborhood. Candice began trudging down the sidewalk. A loud boom echoed into the air as the car door slammed closed behind her.
"Ay, Candice!" They yelled. Candice turned for a brief second and cursed. A couple of prophet guys were getting out the car. They all had on some kind of green in their clothes. Candice tore down the street and they were close behind. Candice felt every rock, glass shard, and wrapper that she stepped on while running. She cut through some houses and hopped a fence feeling her dress rise up a bit.
"She fast as shit."
"Yo, lets just stop messing with her."
"Craig would fuck our asses up." The guys said. Candice kept running even if she didn't hear them behind her.
"Nice underwear!" She heard yelled behind her. She kept running. She didn't stop running until she could see the lights at Monse's house. Candice slowed down and hunched over. Her chest burning and the bottoms of her feet pulsing. She leaned onto the gate and crouched down covering her mouth with her hand. She sobbed quietly scared yet grateful. There was no telling what those prophets wanted. The screen door closed and Candice stood up wiping her face. Cesar paused startled. Candice smiled sheepishly.
"You alright?" Cesar asked. Candice nodded her head and laughed.
"Yeah...I just ran here and I thought I was dying because I was having a hard time breathing," Candice said the corners of her lips quivering.
"Well... be safe." He stormed off down the street. I wonder what was wrong. Candice walked into Monse's house and shook her head. Jasmine was knocked out on the couch, Monse stood staring at the door, and only Olivia and Ruby were dancing.
"Hey did I miss the fun?" She asked Monse. Monse turned her head slowly and then walked away. Candice turned to Olivia and Olivia shrugged. Candice, frustrated, walked over to the stereo. She cranked up the music and grabbed a beer from the table. The music seemed to touch every part of her soul and Candice swayed. Her beer bottle swished in one hand while the other hand twirled delicately in the air. It was a slow song.If you want it (yeah)
You can have it (oh oh oh)Soon, Candice was the only one dancing in her own world.
Now, stay woke!
"They gon' find you, catch you sleeping," She sung off key and uncaring. Monse has came back into the living room and pulled out her phone to record. This was a rarity, a treasure, and a moment that seemed to last a lifetime and once she floated down from cloud 9 she was halfway home.
Stumbling through the door way Candice giggled. She hadn't had a lot to drink at Monse's but she was overly zealous. She climbed the steps tripping up a few and resorting to a slow crawl. She crawled down the hallway and into her room. Even if it was temporary this was a moment where Candice was able to exhale. The next day at lunch Candice was faced with Monse's phone being thrusted in her face. It was hot out and Candice had made the, bad, decision to flat iron her hair. A sly smile crept onto her lips as she watched herself dance wildly in the video.
"Look, in my defense, I had a beer," Candice laughed and Olivia shook her head.
"Beer doesn't do that to you," She laughed. They were right it wasn't the beer.
"Whatever let me live," Candice yawned. The boys came to the table and sat down.
"Candice...you're old," Jamal started and Candice raised an eyebrow, "not in that way, sorry I should have clarified, are you familiar with RollerWorld?"
"Jamal there's no such thing as RollerWorld," Ruby spat throwing a fry in Jamal's face. Jamal caught it in his mouth and turned back to Candice. RollerWorld?
"I can't say that I am," she said bringing her water up to her lips. She looked behind Jamal and sprayed water everywhere.
"Candice!" They yelled. Candice slipped under the table shushing them and swatting Monse on the knee when she peeked under.
"I'm not here!" Candice whispered. Two guys came up to the table.
"What do you Prophets want?" Cesar asked.
"Cool it esse...have y'all seen Candice?"
"Who's asking?" Monse snapped. Thank God for Monse.
"We don't know a Candice," Cesar pressed.
"Whatever man, if you see her tell her Munchie looking for her." Munchie? Why did that name sound so familiar. Candice rattled the name around her memory. Monse kicked her arm and Candice climbed back up.
"What did those Prophets want with you?" Cesar asked accusingly. Candice shrugged her shoulders.
"I don't know," she sighed.
"We don't run with the prophets or any gang for that matter," Ruby said. Candice checked her phone. No one texted her or called.
"So, What are you guys going as for Halloween?"
