(While Dallas and Cait are out and about, we're back to diamond city)
(Nathan, Dogmeat, Nick Valentine, and Ellie are gathered at the detective agency)
Nick: Come on. Lets sit down
(Nathan and Nick Valentine sit down at a desk)
Nick: When you're trying to find someone who's gone missing, the devil is in the details. Tell me everything you can. No matter how... painful it might be
Nathan: We're looking for my son Shaun. He's less than a year old. Why would anyone take him?
Nick: A good question. Why your family in particular? And why an infant? Someone would be taking on all of his care. And a baby needs a lot of it. What else can you tell me?
Nathan: We were all in a vault when it happened. Vault 111. It was some kind of cryo facility
Nick: So you were on ice, huh? More importantly, you were underground. Sealed up. That's a lot of obstacles to get through just to take one person. What else?
Nathan: There was a woman and a man. They didn't say much, but I remember the man calling me "the backup"
Nick: So we're talking a small team. Professionals, by the sound of it. The kind that know to keep their lips sealed while they're on the job. What else do you remember?
Nathan: The man who took my son murdered my wife. She was trying to keep them from taking Shaun and they just... they...
Ellie: It's ok. You don't need to say anything more
(Nathan puts his head into his hands)
Dogmeat: (Sad whimper)
Nick: So, we're looking for a cold hearted killer. But he waited until something went wrong to resort to violence... That confirms it. This isn't just some random kidnapping. Whoever took your son had an agenda
(Ellie scribbles some stuff onto a clipboard)
Nick: Hmm. There's a lot of groups in the commonwealth that take people. Raiders, gunners, super mutants, and of course, there's the institute
Nathan: Do you think this institute is responsible?
Nick: They're the boogeyman of the commonwealth. Something goes wrong, everyone blames them. Easy to see why. Those early models of synths of theirs strip whole towns for parts, killing everything in their way. Then you got the newer models. Good as human. They infiltrate cities and pull strings from the shadows. Worst of all, no one knows why they do it, or what their plan is, or where they are. Not even me, and I'm a synth myself. Well, a discarded prototype anyway
Nathan: Prototype or not, we need to find Shaun either way
Nick: You're right. This speculation is getting us off track. Lets focus on what you saw. What did these kidnappers look like?
Nathan: The woman there was wearing some kind of hazard suit. And the man had a metal brace on his arm
Nick: Maybe some kind of improvised armor? A lot of hired guns to that to look tough. The hazard suit's interesting though. Not many mercs can afford something that fancy. Anything else?
Nathan: I'll never forget that voice. Low and rough. Like sandpaper across your face
Nick: Hmm. Not much to go on there. But a tough and commanding voice can get someone pretty far in the violence business. What else do you remember?
