(Back at Cambridge police station)
Haylen: Paladin Danse. Glad to see you're alive and well, sir
Rhys: Are we in luck, sir?
Danse: Mission accomplished. We have the transmitter
Rhys: Finally, some good news for a change. Nice work sir
Danse: I didn't do it alone. Haylen, Rhys, it's time to welcome our newest recruit to the brotherhood of steel. He shows a lot of promise. And with the proper guidance, I think he has the potential to become one of the best
Nathan: Thanks. I promise not to let you down
Haylen: You don't have to prove anything else to me. Getting that transmitter was enough
Rhys: So, you decided to stick around huh? I expected you to just take your payment and run
Nathan: Got tired of wandering alone. Figured the brotherhood was more my speed
Rhys: Too bad. Was getting used to the thought of you leaving
(The room falls silent. You could hear a pin drop)
Nathan: Who pissed in your breakfast?
Rhys: You think you're some kinda hotshot? You come in here, shoot up a few ferals, grab a piece of tech, and all of a sudden you're buddy-buddy with Paladin Danse?
Nathan: Pay attention. You might learn something
Rhys: Got some backbone, huh? Good. You'll need it if you're gonna be in the brotherhood. You still need to prove you're not a threat
Nathan: I don't have to prove anything to you
Rhys: Yeah, you do. You need to prove that you're not gonna put a bullet in my back the second I turn around
Nathan: Tempting
(Nathan and Rhys walk up to each other and have an epic staredown)
Rhys: Out with it! What's your game?
Nathan: What in the blue hell are you talking about?
Rhys: I can usually size people up at a glance. But you? You're different, and it's bugging the hell out of me. You're not the military type. You're a loner. What reason could you possibly have for joining the brotherhood?
Nathan: Because the institute kidnapped my son. And the brotherhood might be my best shot at finding him
(Rhys's eyes shoot open, Danse's jaw drops open, and Haylen covers her mouth with her hands)
Rhys: Well, as far as reasons go, that's a pretty good one... Look, I'll cut you some slack since Danse trusts you. But if you ever step out of line, or put my brothers or sisters in danger, I'll make you regret it
Danse: Both of you, that's enough! Like it or not, you two are gonna have to work together. And you. You need to understand what it means to be a part of the brotherhood. We're not soldiers of fortune. We're an army, and we're dedicated our lives to uphold a strict code of ethics. If you intend to stay within our ranks, you need to obey our tenets without question
Nathan: Don't worry. I have military experience
Danse: Perfect. Then there's no need for a long lecture
Haylen: Military experience? The army fell apart before the war
Nathan: I was born before the war, but I was cryogenically frozen. I only woke up recently. And before I was frozen, I fought in the great war. It's how I got my spot in a vault
