6| Water Serpents

The Twin Jades of Gusu, the Twin Prides of Yunmeng, and a few Gusu Lan Air Clan disciples rode on separate boats. Each headed to clear the situation of water serpents in the lake. Every airbender used long bamboo poles to paddle their way in the right direction. Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng, who were the only waterbenders in the group, used their bending instead to move their boats.

"Young Master Lan, has Caiyi town been terrorized by water serpents before?" Wei Ying asked.

"Never. They only appeared recently. I had formations and nets set up around Biling Lake and caught a dozen water serpents in a row." Lan Huan answered.

As they rowed together, they passed by the narrow stream of tall, enclosed stone mountains and soon came to a wide, open lake.

"How strange! Water serpents are picky about their area. They usually stay near the ocean or much larger bodies of water. Very few leave. Besides, I think what we encountered just now has more than just mere young water serpents." Wei Ying said it out loud for everyone to hear.

"Even the combined efforts of you and Wangji failed to catch it. These creatures are truly vicious." Lan Huan said, sounding worried.

Wei Ying kneeled to the side, putting his hand into the water to feel its energy. The water felt cold, like he expected, but it was oddly as cold as freezing ice. Something was off about the lake, and a strange sensation came as soon as he made contact with it. He identified the kind of energy that was flowing all over the lake.

"So catching it with nets is unlikely. If only maybe we can use Yi..." Wei Ying was interrupted by a sudden splash of water in front of him that quickly got his attention.

Jiang Cheng was the one who did it.

"Look into the water and focus on finding it. Don't let your imagination run wild again." He said.

Wei Ying smiled and stood up.

"Elemental bending used to be a wild idea, too," he said as he moved his body again, making the water push his boat closer to Jiang Cheng. "Moreover, Biling Lake is overflowing with Yin energy, so it might have attracted the water serpents. Instead of treating the symptoms by catching the water serpents, why not harness the Yin energy to eliminate the root cause?" he whispered, all excited over this idea.

Jiang Cheng looked at him in disbelief. The other was talking nonsense again about the Yin energy. Immediately, he bent the water to push Wei Ying's boat away from him.

"Copying 'Righteousness' 10 times wasn't enough." He glared at the older man.

Wei Ying put a hand over his mouth and nervously laughed. He turned to his other side, where Lan Zhan was quietly rowing his boat, holding a long bamboo pole. He admired the sight of the quiet jade. However, he noticed something was out of place. Lan Zhan stood on his boat all alone, yet Wei Ying observed that it sank deeper than the weight of the one person it carried. An idea came to his mind.

"Lan Zhan!" Wei Ying waved, loudly calling for another. He even jumped up and down on his boat, creating splashes and making it rock. "Look at me!"

Jiang Cheng face palmed himself, experiencing the embarrassment that Wei Ying does not ever seem to feel.

"Wei Wuxian, can you stop fooling around for a change?" Jiang Cheng shouted.

Wei Ying gave him no reply. He had already bent the water to push him quickly to Lan Zhan's boat. Going through at a speed that would surely crash harshly against the other. Lan Zhan ignored his summons until he realized what the other was planning. As soon as Wei Ying was near, he moved the water in between them to create a huge splash. Lan Zhan almost became completely drenched, but he jumped off in time to avoid it. Now he was on the boat with his older brother.
