Far off the borders of Gusu, during a moonlit night of misty mountains and calm waters which sat somewhere within Qishan Wen Fire Clan territory; it happened at the same time as the night Wei Ying and Lan Zhan had met.

There was a group of non-bending travelers that waited for the arrival of a boat. Through the distance, they caught sight of the moving vessel finally within sight. They rejoiced at its approach, preparing themselves and their belongings to board it. Unknown to them all, something lurked in the dark, murky waters. With the moonlight barely reaching the deep trenches, no one could see the perilous creature. The waters then began to awaken in violent waves. Having no regard for the sailors aboard the wooden boat, it twisted and played with the puny vessel, then drowned it. An enormous water serpent emerges from the misbehaving waves. It raised its massive head and body, alerting viewers to its presence. The people screamed as the serpent looked very much ready to devour them all. The supposed drowned boat was taken above the surface again, with the serpent encircling it, ready to crush it with its long snout and mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth.

"Water serpent! The water serpent is here to kill!" screamed one of the men that stood at the wooden docks.

"What can we do?" Shouted another.

"Qishan Wen Fire Clan is here to purge the evil monster. Everyone, stay clear!" Atop a cliff sticking out of a mountain were men dressed in red robes, stitched with fine embroidery of fire-like designs that filled their linings. "Formation!" Screamed the man who was leading the group.

As the serpent continued to torment the waves, a few firebenders from the Qishan Wen Clan went flying. They used their fire to keep themselves hovering in the air above the serpent. This clearly looked like a difficult task for them. They were going against their exact opposite element, and the best they could do was attack the serpent with fire blasts. The firebenders took action, placing all their strength and energy into possibly burning the serpent to a crisp. Altogether, it was a huge attack, enough to drive it back into the depths of the water. Although it was no longer above the surface, they resumed the onslaught of fire to be fully sure the monster had been killed. The waves moved violently and destroyed the wooden docks. Fortunately, everyone was able to escape before the waves dragged them along. The water soon rested, and the serpent was gone.

"Evil is purged. You can sail at ease from now on." The same man from a while ago declared

"Thank you to the Qishan Wen Fire Clan! Thank you for helping those in peril!" Shouted by those travelers.

The man smiled arrogantly over what he deemed a victory and a job well done. However, a much younger and wiser man walked up to him and said, "Young master, you ordered us to eliminate this evil creature. But we merely drove it downstream. Is it inappropriate?"

"How so? The creature underwater is extremely ferocious. Eliminating it is no trivial matter."

"But it's Gusu Lan Air Clan's turf downstream. I'm afraid..."

"What about it? Among the elemental-bending clans, over half are affiliated with our Qishan Wen Fire Clan. A mere Gusu Lan Air Clan wouldn't dare stir up a ruckus." The arrogant man responded.

Observing atop the cliff, the wiser and younger Wen firebender watched as the serpent was still alive. It left the vicinity and indeed swam downstream, where it would soon reach Gusu.

A storm was now slowly brewing.

Lan Wangji stood up.

"First, liberate. Yang energy can be used to change negative energy into positive energy. If it fails, suppress it. Some of the opposing energy can be overwhelming and would persist, exterminating it. Benders should abide by this order without fail." Lan Zhan answered in a monotonous voice.
