23| Leaving Cloud Recesses

Wei Ying ran to their dormitories. He stopped outside and hesitated to proceed. He silently walked to peek first through the open window. Inside, he saw Jiang Yanli sitting alone by the table. With its aromatic fragrance, an incense was burning. Jiang Yanli was staring at a small and beautiful cream-colored embroidered pouch. She gently caressed it with her thumb, looking very sad and lost in her thoughts. It seemed that the news of her broken engagement had reached her. Wei Ying felt sad and guilty, believing that if he had not engaged in a fight with the peacock, none of this would've happened. Jiang Yanli carefully placed the pouch down. Wei Ying thought of an idea to cheer her up. He took out his water pouch and bended some water out. He reshaped its form into a miniature human figure and let it travel towards her. The mini water human made its way to the table, and Wei Ying bended the figure to do some funny dances.

Jiang Yanli immediately smiled as she watched it. The water figure suddenly tripped. It got itself back up again, looking sheepish, and gave an apologetic bow to her. Jiang Yanli offered her hand, to which the figure leaped onto her open palm. She brought it close to her face.

"A-xian, I know it's you." Jiang Yanli said.

Wei Ying's smile dropped. The mini human figure lost its shape, and the small water stream went back to Wei Ying. He hurried to leave, unable to face her after being the cause of her broken engagement. Before he could leave, the doors opened and Jiang Yanli came out.

"A-xian." Jiang Yanli called.

Wei Ying stopped, his back still towards her. He couldn't find the courage to face her. Jiang Yanli walked over to him instead.

"Shijie..." Wei Ying slowly faced her, his head bowed down as he was unable to meet her eyes.

"After kneeling for so long, are you okay? How are your knees? Let me take a look." Jiang Yanli said to him.

Wei Ying almost cried. Even after breaking off her engagement, she was more worried about his well-being first.

"Shijie, it's my fault. Why don't you scold me? I'll feel better that way." Wei Ying said.

Jiang Yanli smiled softly at him.

"A-xian, this matter has got nothing to do with you. Don't think too much about it." Jiang Yanli looked away into the distance. "Fate can't be forced."

"Shijie, you will marry someone who's much better." Wei Ying tried to cheer her up.

"Our A-xian will also marry a beautiful and talented female bender." Jiang Yanli giggled as he patted his head.

"I don't want that. I just want to keep you company at Lotus Pier." Wei Ying replied.

"A-xian we will soon leave to go back to Lotus Pier. Once A-Cheng comes, we will go together to the Elegance Room to bid farewell to Teacher Lan and Sect Leader Lan." Jiang Yanli informed him.

Wei Ying would've been relieved to leave and head back to Lotus Pier if it had been the first few weeks of the lectures. But now, he wasn't ready to leave just yet, or at least part ways with a certain someone from the Lan Sect.
