22| Broken Off

Jiang Yanli was walking down the path all by herself. Jiang Cheng and Wei Ying had left her, chasing after Jin Zixuan. She was worried for them but she was assured Jiang Cheng would ensure the two would not get into trouble. While on her way down the mountain, she noticed the brewing whispers from the other disciples around her. Then suddenly they started to run, it was like they all had someplace they urgently needed to be at. She had no idea what was going on that made them appear too eager to go wherever they are headed to.

"Lady Jiang! Lady Jiang!" Mianmian called out in a frantic voice.

Jiang Yanli stopped, surprised and alarmed to see Mianmian running in a panicked state right towards her.

"It's bad! Master Wei! Master Wei! Master Wei and my master are getting into a fight!" Mianmian  pointed at the direction she came from.

Jiang Yanli then realized why the others were running, they were going to see the two fight. She said nothing in reply and started to run too in order to find Wei Ying and Jin Zixuan. Mianmian followed behind. She was guided by the loud voices to a clearing almost at the foot of the mountain where a crowd had formed. She ran and pushed through to get herself to the front and indeed saw the two in a heated battle. It was water against earth, the two elements clashing all over. More disciples gathered around to watch the fight, and no one in the audience dared to intervene. Only Jiang Cheng had been trying to break it off. He'd been shouting at Wei Ying to stop, but the older waterbender was too deaf to hear his words, nor was he able to fully process them as he was too engaged in the fight. Jiang Cheng's voice was also being drowned out by the surrounding voices. He'd been trying to reach the center but kept getting pushed to the back by the ridiculous disciples that were betting on who would win.

Wei Ying was in the middle of forming an ice shield to protect himself from an incoming large chunk of an earth block attack.

"A-xian." Jiang Yanli  called out to get the waterbender's attention.

Wei Ying stopped midway, unable to finish his ice shield. He made eye contact with Jiang Yanli and saw the scared look in her eyes.

"Shijie." Wei Ying was shocked to see her there.

Jin Zixuan was still unaware of Jiang Yanli's presence. Wei Ying's momentary distraction allowed Jin Zixuan an opening to perform an earth launch technique that threw Wei Ying off the ground. He had his guard down, and so the slanting column of earth that sprouted from the ground hit him right in the chest. It was a lethal attack and threw him away, his back fiercely hitting against a tree. Wei Ying lifelessly fell to the ground. Everyone held their breaths and waited for him to stand back up, but he remained unmoving. Jin Zixuan had now stopped attacking, and his face was filled with conflicting emotions about what he had done. Yet he stubbornly chose to stand with his pride.

"Wei Wuxian! Stand up! Were not done yet, you arrogant orphan!" Jin Zixuan shouted.

Gasps were heard from all around him. He turned his head to look at the faces of the crowd encircling him. Then his pale yellow eyes met with Jiang Yanli's scared and disappointed olive green irises. Only after making eye contact with her did he come to realize the weight of his words and his actions.

Jiang Cheng had finally gotten himself to the center of the now quiet crowd. He saw Wei Ying's unmoving body, and he also heard the inconsiderate, boorish words of the earthbender. His anger overtook him and he turned towards Jin Zixuan.

"Jin Zixuan!" Jiang Cheng  yelled, his punch aimed squarely at the same cheek Wei Ying had hit earlier.

Some people from the crowd actually went to break up the two. Jin Zixuan did not fight back from Jiang Cheng's punches.
