Music for the chapter: I'm Mess by Bebe Rexha
"Everything we could try, we have. Gurukul is going to reopen and all the Devansh have to go back to their learning. So do you." Maa said. She brushed my hair.
"Maa, I don't want to give up. I can't. It is Adi. My sister." I told her. She held my face and kissed my forehead.
"I have a sibling too, Sonakshi. I can understand what you feel. Alaknanda is no less to me than my own child. She is no less to me than you are." She tried to tell me. I held her hands.
"Maa, I know that. Just that my heart wouldn't rest until I have Adi standing before me. She's anyway such a loudmouth that she will end up offending someone that she cannot handle alone and get into trouble. Not that there is a lack of people who want to kill Adi. She had gone and challenged Virat himself to do his worst to her. Now, I worry what all she might face."
Every day Maa would sit on my bed and stay with me till I fell asleep. Through all this, she had been my place of comfort. To sleep as I wrap my arms around her. The soft saree that she wears, the scent of kadamba flowers that comes from her. Her sweet lullaby that she sings. She taps her feet to make her anklet tinkle and add an instrumental to her lullaby. Her soft patting on my head.
When I wake up in the middle of the night from a nightmare, baba sits next to me. Baba, Nandi, and I would take a walk around. Not much of talking just walking. We trek down till Mansarovar. We sit there for a while. Baba would tell me and Nandi about his devotees and how sometimes they amuse him. Sometimes it would make me laugh. Sometimes he just plays his damru. I mostly end up falling asleep with my head on Nandi's shoulder.
"She is my brother's daughter. If she's anything like him, I know one thing that she will shake up all of them. She's half of my brother and half of Sri, who is one of my closest friends. Any child of theirs is meant to make them dance to the music they play. It is natural to worry about the ones we care about but only when they go through the fire, the strength of a diamond is seen."
I remembered what Mama had told me earlier.
"Mama said earlier that maybe she was pushed away from me because I have always found my comfort in her."
Maa smiled.
"Jyesth has always been someone who speaks in riddles. Whether it is true or not is up to your belief. But one thing is for sure that Jyesth knows what he does. If he hasn't forced Indra to send you to look for Alaknanda, he has a reason. I know how much Jyesth loves her. Yet, if he is not forcing his way into Patala, something is going on in his mind. He's a schemer."
I gave her a look.
"That would be called offensive by many people."
Maa broke into laughter.
"Oh, I'm aware. I'm aware of the fanatism. The eternal war between Vaishnavas, Shaivas, and Shaktas. Trust me I'm aware. It makes me laugh at times. It is funny how their ignorance is. Also, several times, we become so divine to them that they assume it is impossible for us to behave like regular siblings. But I know how Jyesth and I are."
