With your stomach having said everything, you and Maria make your way into the kitchen where you see two plates of spaghetti laid out for the both of you.
"Didn't make any for mom and dad?" you question.
"Oh don't worry", Maria assures you, "they already called and said they were eating out tonight, so I made dinner for just the two of us"
The two of you sit down at the dinner table, Maria removes her apron and hangs it on the back of her chair.
"Well dig in Lucas, I wouldn't want your stomach to eat me with how much it's been growling", she laughs at her own joke, it even gets a smile out of you too.
You do as she says, and quickly start to devour your spaghetti, "God I've missed your cooking Maria! When I was away, this, right here, is one of the things I thought about the most, out of all the amazing restaurants I've been to, nothing beats a home-cooked meal made by you! I'm glad to be back."
Maria covers her mouth and giggles, "I'm happy you're here too, you know, it's just not the same without you here, this place feels so empty when you're gone."
Still chewing your food you say, "Yeah but mom and dad are here, so you can't be too lonely."
Maria lowers her gaze away from you and onto her food, she stays silent, you raise an eyebrow in confusion and decide to prod at her silence, "Am I wrong? Are they off on business trips a lot or something?"
Maria clears her throat, "They are gone a lot, but...", she hesitates, "I actually like it more when they're gone..."
"What?", you react in surprise, "Why is that?"
Maria seems to shift uncomfortably in her seat, "Well, it's because I don't think they like me," you put down your fork and listen attentively, Maria continues, "since you've been gone, they've been really cold to me, I mean I always knew I wasn't REALLY part of the family, but at least while you were here, they pretended to like me."
You speak up, "Not part of the family?! Why would you ever think something like that, of course, you're part of the family, Maria!"
"Maybe to you I am, but... I hear them talk at night, and sometimes they talk about selling me off, getting a new catgirl, because to them I'm just their maid."
You clench your fists in rage, "Selling you off!? H- how dare they!" You stand up and start to pace back and forth, "When they get home, I am going to LAY into them, GOD, I can't believe they would be so shallow!"
Maria slowly raises from her chair and makes her way to you, gently grabbing your hand, she makes you stop dead in your tracks, your eyes lock onto each other.
"Lucas, let's leave this place, me and you, we could just go and never look back."
