You decided to stay right where you are, "Maria sure is acting weird today, has she always been like this?", you ponder. A short time later the seemingly frozen feet finally move away from the door. Although the entire situation was odd, you decide to let go, and after scrolling through your phone for about an hour, you finally doze off to sleep, the symphony of crickets sending you on your way.
You wake up the next day to birds singing, you feel refreshed, the jet lag from the trip down here has really messed up your sleep schedule, and you feel like you're finally back in a good place. Your stomach rumbles as you realize you've barely eaten anything in the last two days, "I should go see if Maria has made any breakfast", you think. You get out of bed, stretch your arms and make your way out of your room, then down the hall and into the kitchen, unfortunately, Maria isn't making breakfast, you then notice the dishes that she had been cleaning the day before weren't done either, "that's weird", you think, "it's not like her to leave chores unfinished like that". You decide to go looking for her, you go to her room and knock on the door, but no one responds.
"Maria?", you call out.
Your knock and repeat her name a few more times, finally, you decide to open the door. You slowly turn the knob, giving it a gentle push, the door creaks open, inside, you find... nothing. Maria is nowhere to be found, her room is very tidy, but that's no surprise, it always has been, you check around the room but to no avail, she's not there. You walk back to the kitchen ready to give up on your search when you notice something outside, you walk to the glass doors, the house sits near the edge of a cliff, beyond it, the ocean, as far as the eye can see. You open the sliding glass doors and walk out onto the dewy grass barefooted. Carefully you make your way to the cliff edge, and there, two pairs of shoes silently sit at the edge of the world, Maria's shoes.
