Arkala's Princess

Chapter 4

"Hey mom?" I say as I approach mom sitting at the table, sipping some morning coffee.

"Yes, Sydney?" Mom replies, as I walk to the toaster and put some bread in.

"I....." I sigh. "I think we should talk this out." I say as I get out some Nutella.

"I think we should." Mom says as the bread comes out of the toaster. I grab it in silence and walk to the table, with the plate of bread, Nutella and a bread knife.

"So...... You really want me to become queen?" I say as I sit.

"Well.... There isn't really any other way we can solve this. Sydney, you won't become queen immediately. There's always your grandma who was queen, she could be queen for a bit and you can be princess, until you're ready to be queen."

"I'm sure I'm not the only solution....." I trail off as I put some Nutella onto the bread.

"There are our cousin's cousins, but that would get complicated..... And maybe some close friends but.... You seem like the right solution." Mom says carefully as I bite into my toast.

"Mom......" I sigh. "I.... I don't know, like, I don't know what to do, I don't know how to act, I don't know how-"

"Sydney, we'll teach you. All we need is for you to answer this one question." Mom pauses. "Do you want to take up the role as the queen of Arkala?"

"That's..... That's what I don't know, mom." I say. "Honestly, I.... I don't know... Like, there's a part of me that kind of wants to do it, but the other part is saying that I shouldn't."

"I understand. Sydney, I know this is sudden. We didn't expect Genevieve to pass away. Then you would've had more time to think this through and everything. I understand if you need more time. But Syd, follow your heart. And just know, that if you choose not too be queen, who am I to judge? I declined too, but let me tell you something." Mom says. "Aunt Gen was really fond of you. You probably don't remember her much, we told you that she passed away when you were seven, honey. She wanted you to be princess, with her as queen, Sydney. She did. I'm not just saying this. Genevieve saw potential in you, honey. Just know that."

"Yeah." I say quietly. "Okay."

After I finish my toast I go upstairs and sit on my beanbag.

What do I do? Do I do it? It's not like I can really talk about this to anyone else, they would kind of.... I don't know. It'll just get complicated. I can't tell anyone. I won't tell anyone. Not until I'm ready to tell them, at least.

"Hey Syd?" Dylan asks as he knocks on my door. I immediately get up and walk over to my bed, pretending to do something.

"Yeah?" I say and he opens the door and walks in. "What's up?"

"Oh, well... I was just wondering if you were gonna do it or not." Dylan says as he sits down on my beanbag.

"Um..... I don't know yet." I say. Why is Dylan suddenly interested in this? "Do you think I should?"

"It's your choice." Dylan shrugs. I stay silent, and look at him.

"Then why do you keep asking?"

"What? No I'm not."

"Yeah you are." I say, rolling my eyes.

"Shut up."

"So you admit it!"

"Yeah yeah whatever. I'm just curious, okay?"

"Do you think I should actually do it though?"

"I don't know." Dylan sighs. "It will change quite a lot of things. Like, you probably have to stop going to school and to go to Arkala."

"What?"

"Stop being stupid, Syd. There are consequences."

"I know that Dylan, shut up. It only hit me now, the fact that I'll never be able to go to school again."

"Wow, great job Sydney. You only thought of that now?"

"Well it's a lot to take." I mutter.

"Whatever. But it could be kinda cool."

"Yeah......" I say. "But I don't know if I want to be queen."

"But mom said you would be a princess."

"Yeah, but after. Like, I don't know if I should. A princess would be cool though." I say and Dylan shrugs. "I don't know, could I, like be princess, like to see what it's like, and then.... And then decide then?"

"I don't know! You have to ask mum, not me."

"I was just asking for you opinion, you were the one who asked me if I wanted to do this or not in the first place."

"Whatever." Dylan says as he gets up.

"When are you going back to college?"

"Probably in a few weeks." Dylan says. "Gotta go." He says and walks out. Dylan is on break from college, and he decided to come back home to spend his break, which is okay.... It kinda sucks in a way, but at the same time, he's the only sibling I have and I miss him. Sometimes.

"Hey Syd." Ryder says as he slings an arm around my shoulders.

"Hey." I breathe as he leans in and kisses me on the lips.

"So is your brother home?" Ryder asks when we pull away.

"Yeah." I say, and he leans in to give me kiss again.

"Missed him?" Ryder asks when we pull away again. We start walking to where we were supposed to meet Kara.

"I don't know....." I laugh. "Hey, the big game's this weekend."

"Yeah." Ryder says. Ryder is the quarterback of the school football team. And me? You guessed it, I'm the school's head cheerleader. Cliché, yeah, I know.

"Do you have practise all week?"

"I think so."

"Aw, I won't be able to hang out with you after school." I pout.

"I know, I'm just so hard to resist." Ryder says and I gently slap his arm.

"Well, I have all my other guy friends to hang out with." I say. Ryder glares at me and I smile as I kiss him lightly on the lips and pull away. "Don't worry, you're the hottest guy I know."

"Good." Ryder grins and kisses me, his hands sliding down to my hips, pulling me closer to him. My own arms are around his neck, and we stumble to a few lockers, and my back is leaning on a few lockers. Ryder kisses me passionately, in which I return, my hands in his hair, pulling him towards me more.

"Excuse me." A voice says, making us pull apart. A girl with big glasses on, and an oversized sweatshirt and baggy jeans says.

"What." Ryder says harshly, wrapping an arm around my waist. I feel his warm hand on my skin, I'm wearing a red crop top with a black skirt that comes to about mid-thigh.

"M-my locker i-is there....." The girl trails off. I slowly move to the side, and Ryder pulls me away, and I send the girl an apologetic smile, and follow after Ryder.
