Diana stopped, frozen in her place as she recognized the voice. It brought a shiver down her spine and she hated it. Mostly because, for the longest time, it used to be one of the sounds that brought her the most comfort. But now, hearing Charles' voice only made her want to cry. Because everytime he addressed her, all she could feel was hatred and fear and she hated it. She hated it because she didn't know how to deal with it; she didn't know how to fix it and, if she didn't fix it, she wasn't sure what else she could do instead.
"Charles..." Diana mumbled, the name almost burning in her tongue as she stood by the door, her eyes glued to the man standing just in front of the door of the secret room Scott and Malia had found a few days before - the exact room Stiles and Diana needed to be in right now - with about four other hunters beside him, all holding guns that looked far too big to be fired inside. "Please..."
If she was being honest, Diana wasn't sure what she was begging for, but when Charles barely reacted at her words, she felt her heart shattering in her chest and, suddenly, she felt sick. Stiles was quick to notice it, however, one of his hands instantly shooting out to grab Diana as she wobbled in her feet, holding his girlfriend by the waist as he stepped up in front of her.
"We don't want any trouble." Stiles spoke up, a little unsure on how to handle the situation, but knowing he needed to act fast considering the way Diana leaned into him. "We just need something from inside. We'll be in and out. If you close your eyes, I promise you won't even notice us."
Stiles took a step forward then, only to be stopped by all of the hunters who clocked their guns at the movement. With wide eyes, Diana tugged Stiles back by the arm, stepping in front of him without a second of hesitation as soon as the guns pointed at them and, as much as Stiles wished he could just protect Diana himself, he was pretty sure his girlfriend could handle bullets being fired their way a whole lot better than he could.
"You know, I've always really liked you, Stiles." Charles said, his eyes completely missing Diana as they landed on the boy behind her instead. "It's a shame you've chosen to fight for the wrong side, it seems."
"This is not the wrong side." Stiles argued, without missing a beat as Diana smiled a little, proud of him, but terrified of taking her eyes off of the hunters in front of them for even a split of a second.
"Isn't it?" Charles hummed, unconvinced and the tone of his voice felt like a knife twisting in her chest. Charles had never been so cold and so sadistic like that before and, if Diana was being honest, it scared her to no end to see the man who had been such a caring father to her before turned into... Whatever that was. "Because I'm pretty sure you of all people should know how dangerous it is to run around with people like her."
"What is that supposed to mean?" He asked, his tone angry as if more offended than Diana herself at the tone Charles seemed to be wanting to take with her.
"I can recall a few times you've ended up hurt because of your insistence of keeping yourself close to her." Charles said, his head nodding over at Diana as the girl frowned, struggling already to keep herself from crying. "And, as I've heard, the reason why you were even possessed in the first place, was because of her."
"Dad..." Diana whimpered, the word coming out broken and small, but hitting him straight through the chest it seemed, as he turned his scowl toward Diana.
"Gerard told me." Charles said, his eyes finally finding Diana as they burned into hers. "He told me how you kids sacrificed yourselves and brought to our town supernatural power that you didn't even know how to deal with. He told me that you and your... Whatever powers you have... You were the reason something called a Nogitsune was awoken again after decades. You were the reason it possessed Stiles. You were the reason why my fire department was attacked by masked people out of the blue. Do you remember that, Julia?"
