Dream's POV
17 rounds!! A new record by far! We were both exhausted. Wilbur's parole is over and he's finally leaving the cabin. Everything is right again, better even. Why do I feel so... empty. I woke up to see George passed out on my chest. His arms were wrapped tightly around me and he was mumbling in his sleep.
"Whatcha dreamin about Georgie?" I whispered.
"The cats... they're here.." George mumbled. I laughed gently. I heard my phone vibrate on the table, I picked it up to see an unknown number on my phone. A blurry text message filled my view.
Hey Dream! It's your brother Scott! You remember me from the GH?
I rubbed my eyes and shifted George to the side so I could respond.
Hey Scott, thought I would never hear from you again? I should tell you I'm off the streets!
Scott responded immediately.
Holy Crap congrats man!! I should tell you I found my mom!! Or should I say OUR mom!!! Turns out we are actually brothers😱
I looked at my phone screen, unable to think of a response. I was told my parents were dead. My mom left me in the street to die and now I find out she is alive and well?! Did I need her? Did I want her in my life? I... I at least want a chance to hear why she didn't want me.
"Clay?" I hear George say, shuffling and rubbing his eyes.
"You awake?" I whispered. He sat up and smiled.
"Yep. Good morning Clay." George said groggily.
"Good morning. Also I want you to read this." I said and handed George my phone. He'll know what I should text back.
George took the phone from me, confused. He read me and Scott's messages, then looked at me with wide eyes.
"Wow... what a morning." George said and handed me back my phone.
"What should I even say back? I thought I was the only one left in my family, now I have a mother and a brother." I kept staring at the message. I couldn't believe everything.
"Well, do you trust Scott?" George asked. It was a good question, did I?
"He was one of the better kids down at the group home. I never really liked him, but he looked up to me in a weird way. I don't think he would lie to me." I stated.
"GH stood for Group home?" George asked and I nodded. George sighed.
"Do you want my opinion, or the answer you want?" George asked.
"I want your opinion. I won't go if you tell me to." I said.
"Good, because I think this mother isn't worth your time." George said. I felt my heart drop.
"It's still my mom. I don't know her story." I deflected.
"I may not know her story, but I know you. I know what it's like to have a crappy mom, it's better to not have one sometimes." George looked down.
"George, I don't know her. What if she's better now?" I asked.
"And what if she's not?" George asked. I looked down.
"Maybe it's not worth it." I say and start to feel tears welling.
"Clay, let's make a deal. We should go see your mom once to give you closure, but I'm coming with you to protect you." George said and I scoffed.
"I've literally been shot. I don't think I need a body guard." I joked.
"She probably won't aim at your body, I'm a heart guard." George said and I nodded in response. George took my hand.
"Just remember, I love you." George said and I smiled.
"I always do. You better not forget either." I laughed.
A few days later and we are on the road. My mother actually doesn't live too far from here. She's in the same state at least.
"What do you think she'll be like?" I asked.
"Probably a junkie." George said bluntly.
"Well I hope not. I think she'll be clean and sober six months." I joked and George laughed.
"Yeah, as long as clean and sober means so high she just remembered her street baby." George joked and I laughed.
"Okay that's enough, don't insult her when we're there." I demanded.
We pulled into the driveway and I walked up to the house. It was spacious, welcoming even. I knocked on the door and a beautiful woman in an oversized sweater answered.
"Hello?" She said to me.
"Mom?" I asked and her eyes widened.
"Clay?" She said and we hugged for a long time. In this hug I realize that we had the same hands. I pulled back and she studied my face.
"It's you." She said finally. She then looked at George as if asking about him.
"Oh, this is my fiancé George." I said. Her nose twitched.
"Well congrats on the engagement guys!" She beamed.
I smiled and she let us inside.
"Can I offer you anything? Coffee?" She asked.
"Yeah a coffee would be great.,..." I realized I didn't know her name.
"You can just call me Mel." She said as she handed me a cup of black coffee.
"How about you George? Coffee?" Mel asked. George looked her up and down.
"No thanks I'm good." He says. We all sat on the couch.
"SCOTTIE GET OUT HERE!!" Mel yelled into the hall. Scott came jogging down the hall, stopping when he saw me.
"Dream?" He asked.
"Call me Clay." I say back and hug him.
"It's good to see you brother." Scott said and pulled back, smiling. I walked back to my spot.
"Oh, and this is George." I said and Scott waved.
"So. This is insane. I thought all my family was dead." I said and Mel sighed.
"Yeah. I'm sorry about that. Scott's been trying to help me get sober, I'm on week three." Mel said proudly. Me and George looked at each other then turned back to the conversation.
"Do you have any goals after getting sober?" I asked.
"I'm going to help take care of my boys that I now know and love." Mel takes both me and Scott's hands.
"I promise you, I will be the best mother I can be." Mel stated. I mentally rolled my eyes, but a small part of me believed it. It's my mom.
"We should all go out tonight for dinner, I'm buying." Scott said and we cheered. We all drove out to a classy steakhouse.
"This is too much. I'm underdressed." I say as we reach the table.
"I wish." George said, earning a blush from me.
"You're my brother. I'm okay doing this." Scott said. We all laughed and enjoyed each others stories. Then it got around time to leave. Scott went to the counter to pay the tab.
"That was the best thing I did sober." Mel said to me.
"Thanks." I say looking away.
"Do you and George have somewhere to sleep tonight?" Mel asked.
"Nah, we were just gonna haul ourselves back to the cabin." I said.
"You should stay with me. Just for a bit. I'll help with the wedding planning." Mel said. I nodded.
"Okay, I'll ask him." I said. She smiled and hugged me.
"I love you." She said and took off, running to her car. I turned to George and took his hand, leading him slowly out of the restaurant.
"So, what do you think about that offer?" I asked him.
"I don't know." George said and I shrugged.
"What do you mean you don't know?" I asked.
"She's a bit off." George said. I stopped and took my hand back.
"What?" I turned to him, willing to square up. He rolled his eyes.
"It's nothing, we'll stay." George said and I relaxed again.
