Charles walked into the hospital room with a bouquet of Casablanca lilies in his hand and sporting a smile on his face but it faded when he saw Lewis.
"Hello mate", the Monegasque said to him expecting Lewis to reply and give them space.
Hi Charles", Lewis replied and left the room without any confrontation. He had no choice than to believe Selena would not reciprocate the young man's feelings towards her.
"I brought this for you Selena, do you mind if I put them in the vase by the window", he asked softly.
"Not at all Charles, they are very lovely" she said to him.
He placed the lilies in the vase and took a seat beside her bed on the stool next to it. "I'm sorry about what you had to go through Selena", he said to her and she smiled at him.
"None of us knew what was going to happen Charles, it's no fault of yours", she replied to him.
"I get it but it's surreal, hopefully things get better in good time", he added.
He had fallen for Selena and didn't know how to bring it up in their current conversation and knew Selena dated Lewis in the past but he didn't know if the both of them had settled their differences after their loss. However, deep down in him it was obvious Lewis was still interested in getting back with her and was in the way of anything happening between himself and Selena. All these flooded through his mind until she spoke up knocking him out of his thoughts.
"Apart from coming to check on me to see if I am better than I previously was, what other reason brings you here Charles?", she asked him.
He didn't expect her to ask that question but she did. He thought carefully about his response before he decided to speak.
"Us", he replied softly looking deep into her eyes.
Selena I've been nursing feelings for you for a long time, not exactly when you joined our team but by two races in, I fought within myself to control it because I was still dating Charlotte then but it kept on growing every single day, I tried to ignore but it was almost impossible and I must say the fact that you stayed away from me made it worse, sometimes I would act like an idiot to you just because I wanted to suppress what I felt but hated myself when you were no longer around, Charlotte noticed I had changed and when she couldn't take it anymore she called it quits", he said.
"I'm sure you are aware Selena because you are a smart girl, you pay attention to detail so I'm certain you must have noticed, I honestly want us to be a couple and although this doesn't seem like the most appropriate time we would definitely do well together, but I want you to forgive me for how I treated you at the beginning and as much as it wasn't my intention to deliberately ignore you then because of the directive from our management I believe I could have handled it better, if you would just give me one chance to write all the wrongs that I have done to you and we start afresh I will be the happiest man on earth", he added hoping she shared similar views with him.
"I always knew Charles", she said while attempting to sit up properly on the bed.
"Truthfully I wish we started off differently after I joined but a lot of people were hostile towards me causing me to withdraw further plus I was pregnant and still recovering from a break up when I joined, it made everything much more difficult. Although I knew when you started developing feelings for me I couldn't even let myself fall for you because I was carrying another man's child, it wouldn't have been fair to you at all", she explained and he nodded his head.
"These are the reasons why we've found ourselves here and although I like you a lot, my heart belongs to another Charles, leading you on is not in your best interest, I don't know where my relationship with him will eventually lead to but I'm still very much drawn to him", she remarked.
"I understand", replied Charles.
"I left my hotel feeling confident but the moment I saw him here it all went through the roof", he explained while looking down but Selena held his hands.
"We can still be friends Charles", she said looking at him
"But I want to be more than that, what can I do?", he asked Selena as his eyes pooled with tears.
She pulled him down to her level and hugged him tightly but when he was about to break the embrace he was an inch close to her face. He looked into her eyes and kissed her deeply.
The unexpected kiss from Charles didn't cause Selena to react but the pair broke apart in no time. The only other person that had kissed her in almost two years apart from Lewis.
"God I wish things were different between us Selena", he said as he shed tears in her hospital room.
"Forgiving you is a good start I bet and I have well over a year left with Ferrari on the contract", she said to him lightening the mood in the room. She was the one who needed consoling but here she was consoling him.
"I will leave now and call you later okay", he said and pecked her cheeks before he left the room.
A teary eyed Charles walked out of Selena's hospital room to meet his rival seated outside and waiting.
"Hey", Lewis said to him as he got to his feet but Charles wiped his face and replied him.
"You are one hell of a lucky man", he replied and walked away.
