Y/n's pov
"Do you realize how important it is for you to be seen at all times", my father fussed. I sat in my chair fiddling with my fingers as I listened to his daily lectures.
"You have a responsibility you'-I'm going to be leader soon yes yes I know", I finished rolling my eyes. "I don't think you even fathom how important the leader role is", he sighed rubbing his eyes with his pointer finger and thumb. "You will have to make sure of the safety of everyone here", he stated. "You will have to watch over the young, the old and me", he added. "Why do you need to do all that Y/n", he asked. I let out a sigh hunching over in the chair slightly.
"Because we are like a pack, we take care of each other", I stated. "And what else", he asked. "...We never lie to each other", I finished. "Do you have something to tell me", he asked, I shook my head in reply. "I saw you Y/n, you came out from the entrance", he stated. My dad has always been observant, it's one of the many qualities I possessed from him.
"You've been up there haven't you", he said lowering his head. "Not too far", I replied causing him to let out a scoff and turn around facing away from me. "Dad I'm okay it's not that dangerous up there", I tried explaining, but I went silent when he glared at me.
"Do I have to tell you what happened to your mother again", he asked. "How she was casted out by topside, by her own family", he stated. "Then was killed by undercity's people", I finished. "I know this story dad, a million times", I added. "Then act like you know it", he said. "You can take your leave now", he sighed. I stood up from my chair and headed for the exit.
As I walked towards the blanket that covered the doorway I glanced to the left side of the room to see my father's bow leaning against the wall. It was a forest green mechanical bow with a bright green string. A powerful weapon, I always wanted one like his. I looked away lifting the blanket to exit his office. I turned the corner to only run into my grandma.
"Giving you another daily lecture huh", she chuckled quietly. I smiled at her nodding my head. "Walk with me", she said then turned around. I walked side by side with her. I looked around the huge makeshift hallway we were in. You could see the marks on the wall from whoever carved out this tree or the small leaves that tried to grow out from the walls.
"You didn't hear a word I said", my grandma asked, snapping out of my daze. "Sorry", I mumbled all she was chuckle. "You're observant, but easily distracted like your father", she stated. "You know he worries about you", she added. "Too much if you ask me", I said. "It's not his fault, after losing your Mother it made him like that", she explains. "..I know, but all I ask for is a little freedom", I replied. "To your father, freedom is a death sentence", she sighed. "He fears if he lets you go, he won't be able to handle losing you", she added. "Or you Grandma", i added. She just let out a laugh.
"Baby I'm older than this tree, my boy already has coped with me dying sooner or later", she laughed slightly. I slightly frowned at her reply. "I don't want you to die", I mumbled. "Don't you worry by the time I die you'll be old and wrinkly like me", she replied rubbing my shoulder. "I don't want to be wrinkly", I said in a disgusted tone. "Huh why not you get all this flappy skin", she began to say making me let out a gag.
"No no I don't want that", I groaned. "Suit yourself, it's getting dark out so off to bed", she replied. "Fine goodnight Grandma", I said hugging her. "Good night baby", she replied hugging me tightly. I broke the hug then started heading for my room. I quickly walked to my room. When I saw the floral blanket I lifted it to enter my room.
I entered my room jumping onto my bed to stare up at my ceiling. On the ceiling was a painting of Stag surrounded with flowers, my mother painted it when I was a baby. I wish I got to meet her. Dad rarely talks of her at all, I think it pains him to. I just wish he was more accepting of me going outside this place. There is a whole world to explore, not to hide from it.
I wonder who that pink-haired girl was. I remember her smile so clearly, it was cute. I felt my face heat slightly making me shake my head. I hope I never run into her again, it's bad enough my dad knows I sneak off to go up to the topside. He'll freak out if he knew I'm friends with a topside girl and saved an undercity girl. He'll have me shovel cow shit for weeks, no for all eternity!
I glanced to the side to look outside my window. The huge lanterns that hung from the tree made makeshift stars, but it'll never be closer to the real thing. Even though they're not real stars it helps me sleep, the dark always scares me.
I wonder if I could persuade my father that all topsiders aren't bad. What if I get Caitlyn to write him a note or something? My father can be easily persuaded. He made a deal with a guy named Vander to keep our existence a secret and that guy is from the undercity, he basically built the place I think. Yeah, tomorrow I'll get Caitlyn to write a note for my father, probably. I might chicken out, but I still might try.
