Screaming she scrambled away from it. The creature screeched and jumped on top of her, pinning her to the ground. Kate cried out in pain as she felt its claws slash across her back. With tears streaming down her cheeks she ran her hands across the floor, desperately hoping to find something, anything to help her live.
Her hand touched something cold and hard, a fist-sized rock. Without any thought she swung it around with all her force. It cracked against bone and flesh and with a pain filled screech it scampered off her. She dragged herself and clutching her knees together she tried to make herself as small as possible against the wall.
A hiss came from the darkness in front of her. She clamped a hand over her mouth to muffle a sob. Kate heard it crawl closer...and closer until she felt the warm rotten breath on her face.
SSsssss...pathetic little girl....fear hasssss you paralyssed.
"Wh-what?" She stuttered, her eyes wide at hearing her would-be-killer speaking.
There was a long pause then it sniffed her. Its voice soft and raspy as the crumbling of dry leaves. The little girl hearsssss me.....
She was frozen not sure on what to do.
You sssmell just like a human but there'sss sssomething different....sssomething elssse.
"J-just leave me alone! Please!" She sobbed.
.....you have the ssscent of a black rossse.....
Complete terror enveloped her and then it was as if something inside of her snapped. It welled up inside her and pushed outwards, trying to get out. She clutched at her chest and gasped at the painful pressure in her chest. All of the sudden her whole body felt as it were burning up. The air around her crackled with energy and she faintly heard a screech before a bright flash threw the creature across the room. Its screech was cut short as it slammed again the opposite wall and fell to the ground in a heap.
In an instant it was all over and Kate suddenly felt completly burned out. All she wanted to do was close her eyes. Minutes passed as she laid there, too weak to move. Soon enough she heard footsteps outside the door and then people were standing around her. Someone grabbed her shoulders as her vision was starting to go black.
"Congratulations Kate Morrow. You passed the test".
Then she blacked out.
