To be forgotten

"Dammit, can't you stay still for a second?"

Asraen glared back, arms crossed across his chest. "I'm not going to stand here and let you blast me with whatever new spell you want to try. Remember last week?! It took me days to reverse the effects of that spell."

"How was I supposed to know it was a bone decaying spell?" She scoffed putting her hands on her hips.

"That's the problem. You don't know the spells and what they might cause....at least consult that cursed book of yours!" He spun around and stormed away. "I'm not doing it!"

"I said I was sorry!" Kate called after him but he didn't respond. She turned away with a huff and regarded the open notebook on the table. "Well I guess we'll just have to work without any subjects."

The notebook didn't respond and she sighed again. It would get lonely at times, she had to admit. When Asraen wasn't bickering with her he would usually enclose himself in his study. Vidur would mainly rest, his body too weary to keep up with her and her antics. And Alma.....well, Kate had no idea where that old biddy would go off to but she wasn't sure if she actually wanted to know.

She had busied herself in learning new spells and practicing her sparring abilities. But it could only keep her busy for so long.

No matter how hard she tried to keep them off her mind, they would always make their way in. What were her parents doing right now? Did they miss her? Did they grieve her death? How did they deal the funeral, not even being able to have their only child's body?

Kate groaned and leaned against the wall, eyes misting with tears. She stared at her hand, clenched tightly into a fist and pressing against the wall as if it were trying to make a dent into the stone. Blinking back the tears that were threatening to spill over Kate slowly uncleched her fist and took a couple of deep breaths before turning back to the notebook. "Show me the speculum spell again."

The notebook eagerly flipped open and Kate approached, her gaze tracing over the intricate lines that filled the page. Not that she needed to read the spell since she already had it memorized.

After a couple of moments Kate neared the basin she had set up on the table. She stared at her own reflection in the water and gently pressed her hands against the brim. "Show me Asraen."

Kate's reflection faded away as the water darkened. Before her eyes images began to appear in the water and Kate found herself staring at the image of Asraen hunched over his work. Quietly she watched for a couple of moments before banishing the image with a flick of her wrist. "Now show me my parents."

The water again darkened but just like last time it didn't show her anything. Instead she found herself staring at the opaque waters, a frown twisting her expression into that of annoyance.

"Show. Me.My.Parents" She ordered again, her voice dangerously close to a snarl.

The same thing happened again and water threatened to spill over the brim as Kate gripped the basin. Something was wrong.

Kate marched down the halls, only stumbling a couple of times as she called out Asraen's name. She didn't bother to knock as she barged in but then again she never knocked.

Asraen looked up, his lips pressing into a thin line as he glared at Kate. "What?"

"I need to see my parents."

His look of annoyance changed into surprise and then quickly settled into something she couldn't decipher. Asraen shifted his attention back to the artifacts scattered across his desk. "That's not a good idea." He said.
