Kate sat by Alain's side. His broken arm had been tightly bound and the swelling of his battered face had gone down. After an hour his form shifted with a groan.
Kate stood looking down at him. His eyes opened with a grimace, struggling to adjust to the bright lights. "Wha...."
"Alain it's alright. You're in the wellness center, you're safe."
His eyes finally focused on her. "Kate? Wha-...what happened?"
"We were on patrol and when we were attacked by Orgos."
After a couple of silent moments, his eyes widened. "But...The Orgo....I...I was-"
She rested her hands on his shoulders, gently pushing him back to the bed. "You're safe, calm down. The last thing we need is a freak out, okay?"
He nodded. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be. To be honest pretty much freaked out too."
The corners of his mouth quirked up but then tilted down, his brow furrowed in deep thought. "Kate, how did I get out?"
She drew back nervously, refusing to meet his eyes. "You should rest Alain."
He refuse to back down. "Kate...."
"Well....I may have went after you. But I didn't exactly bring you back either. The rescue team was dispatched to come get us."
For the first time he seemed to notice the bandages that were poking out from the collar of her jacket. "What did you do?"
Her temper flared and she snapped at him. "I crossed over to save your ass, that's what I did."
He stared at her in shock and then his jaw clenched in anger."You shouldn't have done that. You could have gotten yourself killed!"
"So much for being grateful!" She huffed in exasperation as she stood up. "This is what I've been talking about. You are always treating me like a child, which I'm not! I'm not a child, or a damsel in distress and I'm certainly not going to sit there and twiddle my thumbs just because you have a white knight complex!"
"Well if you weren't so disaster prone then I wouldn't have to worry!" He shot back. "Look at you, you're covered in bandages."
"Please, as if you're better off than me. I'm pretty much healed but they insisted on precautions. " She narrowed her eyes at him. "I had worse."
"And that's what I'm trying to avoid but you don't seem to care. Have you ever considered my feelings? Ever since you came around my life has gone upside down and it's all because of you. My break up with Tanya-"
Kate stilled. "I thought we were behind that Alain."
"I ended up being stuck between you two and the only one who really got hurt was me," he sighed. "I don't know what to think anymore."
"It was all an accident, I got drunk and-"
"Tanya didn't think so and that night I lost my girlfriend of almost two years." He glared at her.
Kate glared right back. "It was just a kiss! I was young and the upperclassmen thought it would be cool to spike my drink. I never meant things to go this way."
He turned his face away from her. "Well what's the point anymore? She's gone."
"You still liked her, didn't you?" She asked quietly.
"Yeah. But I like you too and that's what's messing with my head." He laughed mirthlessly. "It's stupid, liking two people at the same time. Look where's it's got everyone......Please leave me alone Kate, I don't want to speak anymore." He shifted to his side with his back to her and said nothing more.
She tried to blink back tears but they spilled over. Without another word she walked away and she began walking faster until she was running down the halls, not caring if anyone saw her. After slamming the door closed she sank to her knees, sobs racking her body. He was right, If I was never here then none of this would have happened. Tanya would still be alive...
Her sorrow slowly began to turn into anger and she slammed her fist against the wall, not being bothered with the pain that radiated through her. "So much for being a Necromancer! I'm so useless, I can't even protect my own friends!"
She turned to the book which laid open on the stop of her nightstand and her eyes narrowed. "I'm not weak!," she snarled. "You want a Necromancer? Fine!"
Snatching up the book she began to draw in every strand of darkness around herself. She was enveloped with it and her soul sang out to the darkness. She had never felt so exhilarated....so alive......so...inhuman. She opened her mouth and the words shot out, burning in the air. They glowed brighter and brighter before her as she screeched the last verse.
The air around her exploded so loudly her eardrums ruptured and she screamed. The painful ringing stayed behind as Kate fell into unconsciousness.
She was standing in a clearing, one that she remembered quite well. It had been two years since she had last been here but nothing had changed. Turning around she stared up at the tree and her eyes searched for any traces of blood or damage. But there was nothing.
The bark was unscarred and dark vines had tangled the trunk in an embrace. Everything was in its place. Yet Kate couldn't help but feel unease. It was too quiet and not even a breeze came through to ruffle at the leaves. It was like being trapped in a picture. So lifeless.
She tried to take a step forward but something held her in place. Looking down she realized she was already ankle deep in the earth. She tried wriggling free but only managed to sink faster, the earth climbed to her knees and her heart began to race in a panic.
Kaaate....
"Who's there?" she yelled out but only silence answered.
Kaaaate.......
She was desperately trying to yank her legs free but the earth only climbed quicker until she was waist deep in the earth. The earth before her began to trembled and something broke through the surface to grip her shoulder. A pale hand half decaying before her eyes.
Its nails dug in painfully and Kate cried out trying to break free. Something else began to rise from the earth to face Kate. Its skin was pale and falling off in clumps of dead skin, black hair in patches with a red highlight that was beginning to fade. The only thing fully intact were the eyes. Bright green emerald eyes stared at Kate and her face paled in realization.
Tanya opened her mouth to reveal a black rotting tongue, infested with yellow wriggling maggots. "Kaaate....."
Kate sat up with a screech, her breath coming in short gasps. Looking down she expected to see Tanya again but only saw her carpet. She was still in her room. The book laid a couple of feet away from her but other than that everything was in its place. She covered her face with her hands, trying to calm herself. In her mind Tanyas' words replayed themselves over and over again.
It has begun.....
