The trees passed by in a dark blur. Kate didn't know where she was running to, all she knew was that she had to run.

Panic and helplessness clawed at her, drawing out tears. Don't cry dammit! Kate chastised herself and instead focused in the direction in front of her. It wasn't long before something knocked her into her and sliced the skin of her back. She screamed in agony and sharp claws dug into her and then she was flung back. The wind was wrenched from her lungs at the impact and she whimpered as she heard something crack.

The creature before her was the creature she had to face during her test. Clumps of dead skin still hanging of its skeletal frame and large blood stained teeth glinting in the light....wait...no it wasn't. Tanya pinned Kate down and clamped down her jaws on her shoulder. Kate shrieked as Tanya's' teeth tore through muscle and reached the bone.

Dark tendrils snaked down her free arm and crystallized turning it into an obsidian blade. Instinctively she thrust her bladed arm directly at Tanya.

Everything froze.

Kate could only stare in horror at her arm which was now embedded in Tanya's chest.

She yanked her arm out and Tanya released her hold. Her body swayed and then collapsed to the side. For a moment her form seemed to blur and ripple and then she was in her human form with a gaping hole in her chest. Her green eyes were blank, staring at the sky.

Kate looked down at her arm noticing how it had gone back to normal. A wave of nausea then crashed against her and she flung herself to the side, vomiting all the contents of her stomach onto the ground.  Once her stomach was empty, she completely collapsed. Shame, fear, confusion, anger, horror....all of these feeling rolled into one and her body began to shake.

She clawed at her throat, feeling something acidic rush up. Her lips parted and a shrike burst through, a sharp shrill sound which echoed through the forest.

Everything inside her then shattered and tears began to fall. For a long time Kate only sobbed and screamed until her voice was raw and broken.

That was how Alain found them.

He spotted Tanya's' body and instantly looked away, his face carefully closed.

Without saying a word he strode towards Kate and wrapped her in his arms. She in turned just clung to him as more sobs racked her body.

Alain tightened his hold on her. "It's going to be okay." His voice came out forced and strained.

Alain said nothing else and held Kate because that was the only thing he could do. They both knew the truth. It was no use trying to make everything okay.

It wasn't.
