Asraen marched forward with an air of confidence neither of them felt at the moment. The long treks through sloping hills and mud had left her muscles aching. They had managed to cross through easily enough but they both spent three days to circle around the encampment, making sure not to be spotted.
The nearer they got, the more difficult it became for Kate to not overthink their plan. In her head, every possibility of what could go wrong was playing out, twisting her gut into a tighter knot. They finally settled around three miles out from the outer perimeter, sitting up in the trees in case of someone passing by.
"You know this plan is absurd, right?"
Kate leaned against the trunk for support closing her eyes against the mid-day sun. "Yeah I know. But it's the least stupid of all the ones we came up with."
Asraen ran his fingers through his now golden locks, lips twisting into a scowl as he tugged at them with distaste. "We didn't have to come up with all of this, it just puts all of us in danger."
She shifted to avoid the sunlight. "I'm not having this conversation with you again."
"Kate..."
"Please Asraen, I'd like our last conversation before imminent death not to be an argument."
"Kate." She finally opened her eyes to look over at him. He was scowling at her with arms crossed. "This isn't time for jokes. Aren't you scared?"
She turned to look at the landscape, taking in the seemingly endless green sea of trees. In the far distance she caught a glimpse of what appeared to be a tall tower, eerily out of place among the unperturbed nature surrounding it. "No, I'm terrified." She crossed her arms, slightly curling into herself. "I barely have any magic and I'm about to go into a suicide mission that most likely won't change anything. I don't exist to anyone from my former life and this new life is practically over considering that this oncoming war will most likely destroy everything. I know I'm not weak, or else I wouldn't be doing this in the first place but that doesn't mean that I can't be scared."
"You're right." He edged closer. "I shouldn't have said that. But to be honest I'm pretty terrified too. I never thought I would end up heading head-first into enemy territory."
The corners of her lips twitched up in a faint smile. "You and I both."
"It shouldn't be long now."
Absently she tugged at her auburn braid, brow furrowing. "Do you think they'll be alright?"
"Of course," he scoffed. "Asani has centuries of experience regarding these matters and I have to admit that Tanya is more than capable of keeping up with her. Besides they're just supposed to serve as a distraction not to go into actual battle. Well at least not yet."
Kate glanced over at Asraen, taking note of the faint dark circles under his eyes. "You should take a nap." When he began to protest, she held up a finger to stop him. "It won't do either of us any good if you're sleepy during the mission. It'll just be a power nap, no longer than thirty minutes and you'll feel as good as new afterwards. We still have time until we move in so I'll wake you up once we get the signal."
He closed his mouth, staring at her in contemplation for a couple of moments before nodding. "Fine. Wake me up if anything happens."
She nodded back at him and he sat down on the branch trying to shift his body into a more comfortable position. Leaning his head back on the trunk he closed his eyes and silence settled over both of them. Once she was satisfied that he was actually sleeping Kate turned to look back on the landscape soon becoming lost in her thoughts.
