Chapter Eighteen: Choices

Scarecrow's POV:

Tonight is the night I finally get this thing off the ground. For the past year, I've been building a Flying Machine to impress (Y/N). I want to fly her around Oz and perhaps this will become the next way to travel around faster. It's supposed to go at least 124 miles an hour but I haven't gotten this thing off the ground to test that. It's just a theory at the moment. I've calculated everything to make this perfect. I'm just nervous when it comes to testing if it can fly.

Getting it off the ground would be nice but making sure it can fly would be even better. While I was making a few final adjustments to the engine, there was a knock on the door. (Y/N)? But she's asleep and it's 2 o'clock at night. Why would she be up at this time of night? I hid the Flying Machine with a curtain before going to see who it was. I opened the door and saw no one until I looked down to see the Mayor of Munchkinland.

"Mr. Mayor? What brings you here at this hour?" I asked

"I want to speak to you about how you're ruling Oz," He said.

"Can't this wait until tomorrow? I'm working on something-"

"To impress (Y/N) (L/N)," he interrupted, "It's no secret that it's for her. That's what I want to speak to you about."

If it's related to (Y/N), I'm definitely not leaving this until the morning. I'll never sleep. I took him to my study for this.

"What's happening that you're blaming (Y/N)?" I asked

"You're focused more on her than ruling Oz properly. You've been rushing your work to spend time with her and make whatever you're making," He explained

"If it works, it will be for Oz too."

"Scarecrow, you have to choose between (Y/N) and Oz. Focus on what's good for Oz instead of your love for (Y/N) or continue what you're doing and you will be replaced as King of Oz."

"You can't make me choose between the two! I can do both! The Wizard never had to make that choice and I know you haven't either! So why am I having to choose between Oz and my love life?"

"Just make a choice. All the leaders are expecting one by the end of the week. Goodnight, Scarecrow."

And that's him gone. I sat at my desk. I haven't been doing anything differently since (Y/N) started living here. Everything has been the same. I have records of nothing changing. Does he just have something against (Y/N) now even though she killed the Wicked Witches? I can't choose. I want to have a life with (Y/N) and take care of Oz which I've been doing fine with. But I have to choose one or the other. I can't. I just can't. It's too big of a choice that might ruin one or the other if I'm not careful.

'The day a door is closed, the echoes fill your soul. They won't say which way to go, just trust your heart,' I left my study

I went outside in the gardens of the castle, 'To find you're here for, open another door. But I'm not sure anymore. It's just so hard.'

I soon saw something flying in the night sky. It was a giant flock of crows. There shouldn't be that many. They flew over to me. I couldn't run back inside to avoid them so I braced for impact but I felt nothing. I looked up to see them all just circling me. They were all squawking the different options I was given and what the mayor said. This isn't real.

'Voices in my head tell me they know best got me on the edge. They're pushin', pushin', they're pushin'. I know they've got a plan, but the choice is in my hands. This time it's man-to-man, I'm driving, fighting inside a-'

I went back inside where the hallway I was in started slowly spinning so I could walk on the wall and ceiling. This is all in my head!

' -world that's upside down... It's spinning faster! What do I do now? Without you? I don't know, where to go. What's the right team? I want my own thing so bad I'm gonna scream! I can't choose, so confused! What's it all mean? I want my own dream so bad I'm gonna scream!'

The hallway went back to normal so now I'm just walking around the palace normally.

'I'm kicking down the walls. I gotta make 'em fall! Just break through 'em all. I'm punchin', crashin', I'm gonna fight to find myself. Me, and no one else Which way? I can't tell, I'm searchin', searchin', can't find a-'

'Road that I should take. I should, turn right or left it... It's like nothing works without you. I don't know, where to go. What's the right team? I want my own thing so bad I'm gonna scream! I can't choose, so confused! What's it all mean? I want my own dream so bad I'm gonna scream!'

'Yeah, the clock's runnin' down, hear the crowd gettin' loud! I'm consumed by the sound! Is it her? Is it love? Can the music ever be enough? Gotta work it out, gotta work it out! You can do it, you can do it!'

I found myself outside again but at the front of the palace. I saw a poster nearby of myself, Tinman, and Lion. I remember that was made so long ago now. I looked at the text below me saying, 'The King of Oz'. I don't want to be the King of Oz if I have to choose between the world and the girl I love when I can handle both! I tore down the poster and walked into the Ozdust Ballroom.

'I don't know, where to go! What's the right team? I want my own thing so bad I'm gonna scream! I can't choose, so confused! What's it all mean? I want my own dream so bad I'm gonna scream! So frustrated with all this, I did scream. I can't make this choice even if my life depended on it. But I have to. I have a week so I'll think about it. I just hope I make the right choice and don't tell (Y/N) about this. She can't know. I'll just finish the Flying Machine for now as it's almost done.
