Chapter Twenty-Four: Brother/Sister bonding time

So, having Maddie here wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We've spent a lot of time bonding and just spending time with each other and she's even been helping me with my relationship with (Y/N). I will admit, I've not been great with it but Maddie has defiantly helped. Even to the point of forcing us to share a bed. We didn't do it much before because I was usually in my study and I didn't think we were at that stage yet.

But Maddie would refuse to go to bed until she saw (Y/N) and I cuddling. She's a stubborn little girl but I still love her because she's my sister. And even with all the help, she doesn't like it when we share a kiss around her. Maddie is only seven so it's normal for children her age to hate it and say that she'll never do it. Which is exactly what she says. I'll wait until she's in her teens to see if she's changed her mind. And (Y/N) likes Maddie being here because she says it's good practice for if we ever get married and have children.

Well, I'm not sure about the children as I'm not human. Adoption is an option but I would like to have some of my own. I once asked Glinda if there was a spell she knew that could somehow give us biological children when we were ready. She said she would have a look and we can come to her when we're ready. I just haven't told (Y/N) about it due to the fact I want it to be a surprise. But I'm nowhere near ready to propose. We only started dating almost eight months ago now.

I want to at least wait a year or so before I make that kind of move. But what would I do anyway? How would I make it special for both of us? I don't want to do it in public because I feel like that's too much pressure for her. This will probably need more planning. A lot more planning. I was in my study again today working on more political things. I don't even know what I'm writing anymore. I'm overexplaining things for a start that I've had to restart it over and over again. I will never not be stressed, will I?

I'm used to it by now, I suppose. When I eventually finished it and tried to seal the envelope with a wax seal, I was startled by someone coming into the room that I made a mess of the wax. I'm running out of paper and wax at this rate! Annoyed at this and how stressed I've been for the last three hours, I groaned and hid my face in my hands.

"Hi, big brother," Said a small voice.

It's Maddie. Before I had a chance to even open my mouth, she took my hat off me and ran off with it, expecting me to chase after her. She's been doing that for a while now. Just steals it and I'd run after her to gret it back. But I'm really not in the mood for it today. I just got a new envelope and started melting more wax. You could see I was done with today. As I waited for the wax, Maddie came back in teasing the fact she had my hat but I gave no reaction. She walked over and peeked over the end of the desk being not that tall.

"What's wrong?" Maddie asked

"Nothing," I lied

"You're not chasing me or getting mad that I'm wearing your hat."

I looked over to see that she was wearing my hat.

"I'm just not in the mood today. I've been writing the same thing for over three hours and I was ready to end the work by stamping the letter with the Oz crest when you burst in and scared me," I explained, "I'm just not in the mood to play. Why don't you find (Y/N) and ask her?"

"She's at her badminton practice," Maddie said.

"That's today? I thought that was tomorrow. What about inviting some friends over?"

"I don't want to play with them. I want to be with my big brother."

I can't win with her, can I? Maddie reached over to me and put my hat back on. I adjusted it properly and looked at the wax. Not fully melted yet. Maddie took one of my blank pieces of paper and my pencil and went to the floor to draw or write something. While she did that, I finally got the wax seal done. I put that in a pile of letters and things that had to be sent and relaxed for a moment. Maddie came back over with the piece of paper and slid it on my desk. I picked it up and had a look. She drew a picture of the two of us with the letters 'B.B.B.F.F,' on the top.

"What does this mean?" I ask pointing at the letters

"'Big Brother Best Friend Forever'," Maddie said

"Best friend? I thought you had one."

"You're better. I'm sorry for annoying you."

"Oh, you could never annoy me, little sister," I said stroking her hair, "I was just in a bad mood. All the leaders were asking things of me and I wasn't doing a good job answering them."

"There's too many people in Oz. I don't like knowing so many."

"No?"

Maddie shook her head, 'When I was just a girl, I found it rather silly to see how many other people I could meet. I had my books to read, didn't know that I would ever need other people to make my life complete. But there was one boy that I cared for. I knew he would be there for me. My big brother, best friend forever! Like two peas in a pod, we did everything together.'

I smiled and put her on my lap.

'You taught me how to fly a kite,' Maddie said

'Best friend forever!' I said smiling

'We never had a single fight.'

'We did everything together!'

'We shared our hopes, we shared our dreams. I missed you more than I realized. It seems...'

'Your big brother, best friend forever,' we said smiling, 'Like two peas in a pod, we did everything together.'

'And though you were, oh, so far away. I hoped that you would stay my big brother best friend forever,' Maddie said hugging me

'Forever,' I promised

We stayed like that for a while before I agreed to have some fun instead of being a spoil sport. She started it with stealing my hat again and running off. I ran after her, laughing. I know some people don't like their siblings but I love mine. I couldn't hate her even if I tried. Besides, she deserves the brotherly love I can offer after I've been gone her whole life so far. And I'm sure she'll return the love however she can. I'm just happy to have my little sister in my life.
