Epilogue

"Evening, Mikasa."
Y/N kneeled down in the grass, the breeze barely moving with her. The large tree planted in front of her held Eren's grave. It sat without a slant, legible and in wait.
The two women were alone with him.
"Hello, Y/N. How are you?"
"Tired, but things are well. Levi is taking a walk with Gabi and Falco right now, so I thought I'd come to visit."

Small hands reached up, grabbing Y/N's hair and putting it in their mouth.
"Nate looks so much like you," Mikasa patted the baby's head gingerly.
"Thank goodness."
They laughed, adoring the small child as leaves fell around them. It hadn't been long since Y/N announced Nate and everyone treated her like glass for the months it took him to arrive.
"I'm glad we're together," Mikasa said, "but I miss him so much."
"I do too," she rubbed her knuckle against her baby's cheek, "but he's given me this new life. I accept this freedom."

Mikasa rested on her shoulder, listening to their heartbeats together. Moss had birthed near the roots of the tree, flowers joining it. The passage of time had begun to make themselves known.
"Do you think the tree will grow anymore?" Mikasa questioned, following its height to the crystal sky.
"No. It's done enough."
She chuckled.
"That's funny, Y/N."
"Is it?"
"That sounds like something Eren would've said."

The sky parted and a flock of birds roamed its vastness. A mother lead her children through the clouds, seeking a new home.
Y/N's face grinned in the rays of the sunlight, her tears dried by the hope that had carried her to this spot beside Mikasa.
She was born for this moment.

Y/N swore she could hear her melody, finished and without a missing beat.
