It had been about a year since Eren had fallen ill to that high fever and he had healed wonderfully. Though there were days where the fever came back, they weren't as bad as the first time around. At least, that's what they had hoped. What they didn't know was that it was only getting worse.

It started off as a normal day. Everyone was in the mess hall, eating their breakfast before training started. That's when Hange noticed something about Eren, he wasn't eating. "Eren?" Hange asked, the boy looking towards her with a slightly raised eyebrow. "Aren't you hungry? I mean, I haven't seen you eat anything yet."

"Not really," Eren replied looking down at the wooden table. The others shared concerned glances. Eren always managed to at least eat a spoonful of cereal, but he hadn't even touched his glass of water yet. "If I'm being honest, I've not really been hungry for the past three or four days now."

"Do you think your fever is coming back?" Jean asked, the rare concern slipping into his voice like it always did whenever Eren's fever was brought up. It was strange how the fever acted, really. One moment he would be fine and then the next he'd be curled into a ball, sweating profusely, and shivering like it was the height of winter. Eren shrugged, eyes screwing tightly shut as pain shot through his body.

"Brat? You alright?" Levi asked, noticing how the boy hunched over slightly before relaxing. The brunette nodded, looking away from the food in front of him. "If you're in pain, don't push yourself too much during training today. We don't want that fever coming back just yet."

"Yes, Captain," Eren muttered as he clenched his hands, mind slightly foggy. In truth he hadn't really heard what Levi had said but knew he had spoken and so just replied 'Yes, Captain' like he usually would. He didn't need people to worry about him, he was fine. He hoped he was, at least.

When the squad had made it onto the field to train, Hange noticed how Eren didn't look good at all. "Levi," the woman murmured to the man as they made their way to the shade. It was quite hot today, plus it would help all of them to focus more. "I don't think Eren actually heard what you said. I don't think he can hear anything."

"What do you mean?"

"Look at him," the two glanced towards Eren who was attempting to make sense of what Armin was saying, "he can barely comprehend what Armin's saying."

Levi sighed as he placed down his ODM gear and headed towards Armin and Eren. "Armin, there's no point trying to get him to talk back. He can't hear properly." Levi said, placing his hand on the brunette's shoulder and guiding him to the shade. Armin followed behind closely, noticing the slight shiver that passed through Eren's body.

"His fevers back, isn't it?" Sasha asked as they joined their captain and ill comrade. Hange nodded, placing a cold rag over the boy's clammy forehead.

"Unfortunately," replied Hange. "I don't think it ever left actually. I think Eren was just putting on an act so we wouldn't worry about him."

Eren groaned, clutching his stomach. "This is worse than we thought," Mikasa muttered, holding back from kneeling down next to him. Levi rubbed the boy's back, holding him close to his chest as the boy continued to shiver, though they were increasing by the second.

"Let's get him inside," Levi said as he helped Eren up, pulling the boy to his side and walking towards the castle where he proceeded to take the ill boy to the room across from his. When they got to the room, Levi helped Eren into the bed and immediately noticed that the fever had increased more. "Stay in bed, alright?"

Eren groaned, rolling onto his side. Levi sighed, Hange quickly entering the room after telling the rest of the squad to give Eren space. It took quite a bit of convincing for Mikasa to stay out of the room but with a bit of help from Armin they were able to convince her. After shutting and locking the door, Hange made her way to the bed and stroked Eren's hair back from his forehead, applying a cold rag.

"I'm worried," Hange admitted in a hushed tone, eyes scanning over the boy with increasing concern. "What if we can't get him better?"

"We will. We have to." Levi was adamant they'd get the titan shifter better, but as the day drew on and Eren's condition worsened, he wasn't quite sure they would be able to get him better.

As night rolled around, nothing seemed to change. In fact, Eren had only gotten worse. Hange and Levi had refused to leave the boy's side, Erwin joining them in the evening. "Any positive changes yet, Hange?" Erwin asked, glancing towards the woman at the boy's bedside who shook her head, tears glistening as she held Eren's weak, clammy hand in her own. Erwin sighed sadly, moving to comfort her as Levi stayed near the boy's head, his glassy Caribbean eyes looking up at him for a way out of this hell he was stuck in. "He'll get better." Erwin comforted, pulling the woman close to him.

"C-Captain..." Eren groaned, Levi grabbing the hand Hange had let go of and bringing it to his chest. "It hurts."

"I know it does, brat, I know," Levi nodded, kneeling next to the bed as he saw more of the light leaving his brat's eyes. "You'll be okay, I know you will." He'd never admit it, but the usually stoic captain had tears in his liquid silver eyes as he watched more light leave the boy's beautiful Caribbean eyes.

"I don't... wanna die.." Eren whimpered, trying to squeeze Levi's hand but didn't have the energy to do so. Levi squeezed his eyes shut tight, bowing his head.

"We'll try whatever we can, okay buddy?" Hange murmured, kissing the boy's forehead as he let out a quiet sob. Erwin ruffled the boy's hair as he grew weaker and weaker. All three of them knew his time on this cursed Earth was up, but they didn't want to lose him. Each of them were close to Eren and hated the idea of him dying.

Hours passed, the morning light shining through the window, and it was silent. No sobbing, groaning, or shivering. It was silent. By now the rest of the survey corps had found out what happened to their beloved titan shifter, and everyone was waiting anxiously for news of the boy's condition. It was tense.

It wasn't much different with Erwin, Levi, Hange, and Eren. The trio waited for any sign the boy was alive yet got none. Hange sobbed, Erwin holding her in a comforting hug as they waited. The tension was killing her. She wanted, needed, Eren to be alive. Levi wasn't much better. As much as he needed to sleep, he couldn't; he had to make sure his brat was alive and on the mend before he could even think about sleeping.

That's when they heard it: a slight groan.

Levi gave a breathy laugh, pulling the boy to his chest as the boy let out another groan, signalling he was in fact alive. Hange sobbed harder out of pure relief, and even Erwin allowed a few tears to spill.

Word soon got out that Eren was alive and that he was now on the mend again. To say the survey corps didn't party that night would be a definite lie. Everyone was happy Eren was alive, and that he was starting to heal. But no one could be any happier than Levi: his brat was alive and on the mend, and that was the best gift anyone could ever give him.
