Katara Pov
I had been married to Zuko for 2 months now. I felt really weird. I knew the symptoms of pregnancy by heart since I am a healer, and I have delivered a few babies myself.
I was sitting on a couch waiting for a nurse to come in and make sure. After maybe about 6 minutes a woman came in.
"Hello Firelady Katara. My name is Zeri, how can I help you?" She spoke.
There was this tone she had I couldn't place my finger on. Annoyance, boredom, tired, maybe all three. It was kind of surprising since she looked like a really nice lady. I could have sworn she was smiling when she first walked in. But now, her face just looked blank.
"I believe I am pregnant, and I want to make sure before I tell Zuko."
"If you are, let's hope he doesn't leave you too." Zeri mumbled.
"What was that?" I asked her since I couldn't quit here her.
"Nothing Ma'am. The last time I checked if someone was pregnant, they had to leave since the father was, "occupied" with someone else. She was my friend and you made me think of her that's all." Zeri responded.
"Oh dear, I'm sorry. Who was it?" I asked her.
"It doesn't matter. Let's just test you."
I saw her bend water covering my forehead. When she was finished, she placed in a cup near her.
"You're a waterbender?" I asked her.
"Yes, I mean you did just see me waterbend." She responded sarcastically.
I didn't know if I should have sat there embarrassed or snap at her comment.
"I'm only teasing your highness." she said smiling
"Oh okay. Sorry." I told her
"Are you from the Water Tribe?" I asked thinking maybe she was someone I could connect to.
"It's fine. I'm not from the Water Tribe, but my mother was. Northern Water Tribe actually. After the war, she came here and met my father. Fire Nation and lived here ever since with him. That is until she wanted to visit her home. On the way there, a man from the Water Tribe must have thought the Fire Nation was still evil. He thought my father was trying to hurt or kidnap my mother so attacked him. Long story short, my mom saved him by pushing him off a cliff by accident and he brought her down with him too." Zeri told me.
"I'm so sorry. How old were you when this happened?" I asked her.
"My dad said I was only a few months old. He told me when I was around 12 maybe. He came back here and became a Chef here when I was around 19. I became a nurse. Us waterbenders are such great healers." Zeri laughed at that last part.
"Anyways, I would always ask him to make me some of Mom's favorite Water Tribe foods. He did when I was little, but I guess the stress and memories came back to him. He even once said he hated the Water Tribe. I know he doesn't mean it, he's just still a bit broken. His favorite thing about me is that I am a waterbender, just like she was. Or maybe my eyes since they're both blue and gold. Remind him of his other half." Zeri told me.
"Wow. I've never heard anything like that. How does feel having a Waterbender as his queen?" I asked. This however changed her look. She looked hurt and a tad angry.
"Like I said he became a chef. He's very talented and does it with passion. My mom also liked most Fire Nation foods. Everything he serves at the palace was something he would make for my mom. Then one day, a certain waterbender insulted him. Like I said, he's still broken and told the girl "Maybe you should go back to the Water Tribe." I had to heal him with a big bruise on his forehead. I guess he doesn't like the idea of having a Water Bender as his Queen. Especially one with a temper like my mom did." Zeri scoffed.
I realized she was talking about me. I gave her father a bruise. I didn't know he had trouble with the Water Tribe before.
"Zeri I-" I wanted to apologize.
"Save it Firelady Katara. You didn't care then, and you don't care now. My father's fine now thanks to me. Congratulations, you're pregnant. Just be careful. I'm willing to give you a new start. But that doesn't mean I forgive you for everything. Enjoy your day." Zeri said, and with she left.
I went to go find Zuko and tell him the big news. Everything? I just went off on her father. What else could there possibly be....
No one's Pov
Katara walked into her and Zuko's bedroom to find him reading something on a nearby desk. "Good evening sweetie." said Katara.
"Hey Katara." Zuko responded.
Katara hated this. When she and Aang were together, he always called her sweetie. It meant he truly loved her. However, she stopped calling him sweetie a few weeks after their engagement.
"I guess this is how Aang felt." Katara mumbled.
"What was that?" Zuko asked still not turning around.
"Nothing. What are you reading?" Katara asked walking over to him.
"Letter from Sokka and Suki." Zuko said smiling
"Really, what does it say?" Katara asked excitedly sitting next to Zuko.
"Suki has just given birth to a baby girl. Looks like her name is Verena Kya Eorl."
"Oh my. She didn't look pregnant when I saw her at the wedding. And She's an Eorl. It's been so long since I've heard my old last name. We have to visit them. Does it say where they are?" I want to visit my niece." Katara said.
"Says Republic City. It didn't say they have forgiven you though. They could just be informing us to be polite. Never said come visit us." Zuko said reasoning.
"Give me that." Katara said snatching the letter from Zuko and read it out loud.
Dear Zuko and Katara, it's been 2 months since we last seen you guys. Suki and I have moved to Republic City since I am now a Councilman there. We hope you guys have been well. Anyways the reason we have sent you this letter because you're an aunt/uncle now. Suki was 2 1/2 months pregnant and was really tired at your wedding. We wanted to tell you in person then and there. Unfortunately, you saw how that turned out. Like I said this letter is about our new daughter Verena Kya Eorl. You deserve to know that much. ~Sokka and Suki
"I can't believe this. We have to go meet her. I have to apologize. They should know they're going to be an aunt and uncle soon too." Katara said pacing.
"But Katara- Wait. They're going to be an aunt and uncle?" Zuko paused and stopped dumfounded.
"Yes. I came back to tell you I was pregnant."
"Oh my Angi" Zuko stood up with his hands in his hair.
"We can discuss this later. Right now, we have to go see Suki and Sokka and make things right. " Katara said.
"But they never said-" Zuko started.
"I know my brother. Plus, they never said they didn't want us to come. This could be a new start."
"But-"
"No buts. We leave tomorrow. Ask Iroh if he can take care of things."
And off they went, maybe this could be a new start for the better or for the worse.
