"You knew about this but you never mentioned anything to me?" Boruto whispered.
He was trying his best to keep himself calm about this sudden engagement they threw at his face but the anger in his tone give his feelings away.
Finally, after what felt like eternity, dinner was over and Sumire's parents were currently bidding their goodbyes to Hiashi and Hinata.
It sounded like they were still discussing things before deciding to call it a day thus the Uzumaki heir took this opportunity to talk to Sumire about what just happened.
Biting her lower lip, she looked at him almost guiltily that it made Boruto feel bad for sounding a little harsh. "S-Sorry... The truth is, I actually just learned about this engagement thing earlier today and I was expecting you knew about it already. But, I guess judging by your reaction... this is the first time you've heard about it?"
"Yeah, you're right. I-I just... everything is too much, 'ya know? It's not everyday you get summoned to dinner just to casually inform you that you have a fiancée and to think that they were planning this way back," Boruto sighed deeply before massaging the bridge of his nose.
All of this is making his head hurt. It's like his problems kept piling up. He hasn't even solve his issue with Sarada and now he has a new one to deal with.
Sumire nibbled on her lower lip. Her heart was hammering loudly seeing Boruto look so troubled.
Maybe he doesn't want this?
Of course he doesn't! Who would be happy about a forced marriage?
She thought to herself.
Perhaps, between the both of them, it was only her who was feeling hopeful and glad about this arrangement.
"Do you not want this?" She whispered almost inaudibly, eyes casted downwards on her block heels as if it was the most fascinating object she had ever seen.
"What?" Boruto breathed.
Purple eyes slowly moved upwards to meet Boruto's confused expression.
"What do you mean by that? Of course I don't want an arrange marriage! You feel the same way, right? Surely you don't wanna be tied down to someone you don't have feelings for." Boruto said that so casually it was like a punch in the gut for Sumire.
Her chest clenched slightly as tears began to pool in her eyes.
"B-Boruto..." She started, "Why do you think I baked you a cake for Valentine's?"
The blond boy seemed to still when he heard the tremble in her voice. His mouth gaped upon noticing the way her eyes shine from the unshed tears under the chandelier lights of their parlour.
A short laugh escaped her lips seeing the look on his face, albeit it was far from humorous. "You're the elite student of our class but you're pretty dense after all..."
"Sumire..."
"I like you, Boruto," she braved herself to meet his gaze firmly even though she felt like running for the hills after her confession. Her heart was thrumming so wildly she was afraid it would burst at any moment.
"I don't know when it started but I just woke up one day, and found myself feeling flustered during our conversations or whenever our eyes would meet briefly. All of a sudden, I will find myself smiling at the thought of you and your quirks, and hurting everytime there's something burdening you." Her lips twitched upwards subconsciously at her memories of them together, although it wasn't a lot, she treasured each of it all the same and keep them close to her chest like a precious and irreplaceable gem.
