"You can't keep her here, Dad."
"Do you have a better idea?"
"..."
"I don't want to do it either, but as long as she stays here, she's safe. If I keep doing this, then she'll be too wrapped up in it to even so much as consider doing anything else."
"This feels like kidnapping."
"And you're any better?"
"Hey! Don't pretend that you're not causing this. You know I follow your lead on most things, and that's without you pushing it."
"I like my children to be safe and happy."
"How happy do you think she'll be if you keep her cooped up in the palace? She's already ran off, what, twice? Does that scream happy child to you?"
"Since then she's been having separation anxiety."
"Are you really saying that like it's a good thing?"
"She is an infant, Triton. You sense that as well as I do. It's only natural that she's not going to want to be vulnerable, especially after she was tortured. Not to mention her being sick. Honestly, I think her getting injured and me taking care of her was enough to cause this."
"Psh, like you're not pushing it? Like you don't want this? I know how you act whenever things start to--"
"We can't have a repeat of earlier. Neither of us would want that, and I highly doubt her mother would either. She- She got drunk and jumped off a fucking cliff, Triton. So can you blame me for wanting to keep her close? When Delphin said it was only luck that kept her alive?"
"Wait, she--"
"...He doesn't know if she tried to kill herself. Percy said she's thought about it before, so I really don't want to take the risk. She's leaning into this, she's getting better with letting me do stuff. At this point, I honestly don't care if she ends up hating me. I'd rather have that than her dead."
"She's already claimed you, and I mean, she wants you to care for her. If she's going to be mad at you for anything it'll be for the keeping her held hostage part. What is it you always like to say? The sea doesn't like being contained? She's your kid, you should know how that goes. Aka see her literally running away twice."
"If she wants to leave, I won't stop her."
"There's a but in there, isn't there?"
"You know I can't help this. My children are everything to me-- Yes, you're included in that, and that's not something you should even be questioning. Right now, hers is the more pressing need."
"Yeah, well, her being a baby doesn't exactly help."
"Triton."
"I meant it literally, not as an insult. ...She can't control it, I know that much, and I'm picking up on it. Olympians, I don't even know how to deal with this! Even if I could ask Athena, she wouldn't have any idea. She's not one of us. I- I don't even remember any of your other kids doing this before."
"The longer she is around us and not other mortals, the more it'll become apparent. Unless we both suppress this, which I'm not planning on doing, she'll begin to exhibit more of our behaviors. It's no different than if she had accepted my brother's offer--"
"Wait, what offer?"
"Immortality. Why couldn't you have accepted, hm? We wouldn't be in this situation at all. No, then I'd be teaching you how to use your powers and that would be too simple."
"Ignoring the fact that you're talking to her like she's awake, you- you still could. I'm not going to complain about it. And what's my dearest uncle going to do? Complain about you making a kid immortal when he's kidnapped how many people and done the same? Most of them weren't even his kids!"
"He always finds reason to complain."
"I'm not hearing a no."
"I don't want to force it on her. It's a not a good idea. And it wouldn't be good for her, not when she made such a point to create a request where Zeus would be hard pressed to deny it."
"He doesn't even honor half of it."
"We cannot sever the oath we made all those years ago, nor can he sever the oaths made upon the imprisonment of those who fought against us. Many of her requests were impossible."
"Then she hasn't even been rewarded!"
"Shush. Don't wake her."
"Sorry."
"She asked for something dangerous under the same oath as the impossible. Inability to fulfill does not negate a request made and agreed to as reward. Though she has not yet been rewarded for this last war she partook in...that she led. I- I could gift her with it."
"But you won't."
"No. Not unless she asks for it."
"Or you could do something selfish for once. Give it to her and then keep her from rejecting it. Keep her here. Safe."
"I have been far more selfish than--"
"When it comes to us, you aren't. You don't do anything for yourself. You take care of us. You're literally going out of your way for her, for a demigod child that you could just as easily ignore. Dad, you can't even say no to us, not without closing off yourself, and that makes you upset. Olympians know how many times you've freaked out with me. I don't even think she'd notice to be honest."
"You want her with us."
"Can't exactly make it more obvious."
"I'm going to make this clear once: I'm not forcing this on her. If she asks me about it, or if I ask and she says yes, I won't hesitate, but she deserves to have a choice with it, I can at least give her that."
