The alarm went off a lot sooner than I wanted it to. I reached over and turned it off before sitting up and stretching. I quickly changed into a camp shirt and jeans. I walk out the door into the tempid morning air.
I scowled as the sounds of the camp hit my ears. The waves seemed louder than usual and so did the sounds coming from Cabin Five. Clarisse is probably beating one of her brothers up, but it's never usually this loud.
I shook my head, wiping my expression. Nobody else was outside. Relief flooded through my body as I walked towards the Big House. At least none of the youngers kids will bombard me with questions. The last time that happened, well...
I knocked on the door and stood. I didn't have to wait long. Soon I found myself staring at Chiron, who hadn't even taken his tail out its curlers yet.
"Percy, what are you doing here? I didn't ask you to come until the evening."
I stared at him for a brief second before blinking. "I could have swore you said first thing in the morning. Sorry, I'll come back later." I took a step backwards. Before I could disappear, Chiron placed his hand on my shoulder.
"You're already here, my girl. We might as well talk about it now so you can do something else later. Do you want any tea?"
I shook my head. "It's just hot leaf juice." I smiled.
When Chiron didn't laugh or even offer a smile in return, mine fell. I followed him into the living room. He stood in front of a filing cabinet while I stood beside the couch. He sighed. "You can sit down."
I sat. Chiron placed some papers down in front of me, which I recognized as camp report cards and my notes and one of the other instructor's.
"Which ones do you think need to move into a different weapon?" Chiron folded his legs under him so he could be closer to the coffee table.
I shifted through the notes, mine were okay but the moment I got to the other kid's, I dropped my head. "Chiron, did you have a new camper teach swordfighting when I was gone?"
"Yes, she is a child of Ares. She is adept with a sword. Not near your level but she was a suitable substitute in your absence. How could you tell?"
"Well, for one, it would explain why I had to correct most of the campers who are in the intermediate class. Two, she wrote all of her notes in English." Everyone uses Greek because we can all read that without our heads wanting to explode.
"Let me see." He took the notes from me and looked over them. "It says she was teaching them a technique Clarisse taught her."
"Clarisse fights with a spear, Chiron. The girl was trying to teach them a way of fighting meant for spears. It wouldn't have been as bad if they were people I had taught before because then they would have known better, but now I keep having to correct people and they get upset and say 'But we were taught this way'. You're going to have to move all of them over to spear training which is going to suck because then of we get attacked then we'll be relying on spear fighters. I may be biased since I use a sword, but you know we need to have a decent amount of skilled sword fighters. If a monster gets past the area where the spears are useful, there's not much to stop them from killing people. Even if we could manage a phalanx, that's most of the camp and it would be pointless in the woods."
I ran my fingers through my hair as Chiron stared at me. I fixed my gaze on the report cards.
"I know you want camp to be safe, but perhaps monsters would not expect a technique based on spear fighting."
I shook my head. "It took me thirty seconds to figure out they were fighting different and it didn't take long for me to disarm them. Chiron, I-" I paused. I can't tell him about my brother. I can't tell him that he disarmed me twice in the same fight. That we only got out of there because we had Diet Coke. I took a deep breath. "I can't train people who refuse to listen. There's no point in it. I'll tell them today that either they actually listen and try to learn the correct way or pick a different weapon. Malcolm could probably use some more kids to learn how to use daggers."
I don't want to push kids on anybody, but if they don't want to listen to me they're going to get killed. And it will be my fault for not teaching them better. And if they get killed because they're using the wrong weapon, that will be on me too.
"Percy?"
"Hm?"
"What were you thinking about?"
"What do you mean?"
He gestured to my clenched fists. Oh. I relaxed my fingers and looked at my palms, at the deep marks pressed into my skin.
"I just remembered I was supposed to call Tyson. He gets upset when I don't and I can't stand his kicked puppy expression. I'm gonna go do that before I forget again or else I'm going to have to spend my entire months allowance on peanut butter."
I left without saying by, desperate to get away from Chiron. He doesn't want to know. He hasn't asked how I am. So don't force this onto him.
As I headed back to my cabin, the conch blew and it was like floodgates opened. Campers poured out of their cabins and headed up to the dining pavilion. I sighed and followed them. It's not like Tyson was actually expecting me to call.
Wow, I didn't wait a month to post a second chapter. And just because I know wattpad likes saying stuff was updated yesterday when it usually isn't
