I sank, every muscle in my body tense. No.
No.
Nononono. I curled into a fetal position, head tucked to my knees.
I managed to gather enough focus to create an air bubble around me. I don't want to hurt anyone. I stayed curled up, ignoring the concerned naiads trying to talk to me.
"Maybe we should call Lord Poseidon?" One suggested to the others. I took a deep breath and sat up.
"I'm fine, guys. I just needed to get away from people up there." I smiled at them.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Can I have some time to myself please?"
They nodded and left me alone after that. I sighed and laid back, trying to stop my hands from shaking. I rubbed at my skin, trying to get rid of the feeling of water against it, despite it being perfectly dry.
I don't know how long I laid there, staring blankly at the surface of the lake, feeling only emptiness. Eventually, a bottle sank down, weighted with pebbles and housing a piece of paper.
I opened it and read the note.
You missed your other classes and lunch. You can't do this.
I very well can. What's he going to do? Kick me out of camp? I doubt he'd do that, I doubt he can.
I wrote cool on the paper before throwing it up. Let's hope it doesn't hit him in the face.
I stood up and walked out of the water, keeping a barrier between it and my skin.
Chiron stood waiting, with his arms crossed. "You have responsibilities, Percy. You can't ignore them. You're not a goddess."
"I know that. I turned that offer down. Twice." I walked away.
"Percy,"
"I'm going to go grab a snack."
"Perseus, you can't put other campers at risk because you've had a bad day."
My chest hurt. "I'm fine Chiron, a kid just pushed me into the lake and I was talking to the naiads for a little bit. I lost track of time."
It wasn't a full lie. I did talk to the naiads for that little bit and then I lost track of time. I was only lying about what I was doing when I lost track of time.
I walked back to my cabin and grabbed a granola bar. I ate half of it before it stopped tasting good, but I forced myself to eat the rest.
I threw the wrapper at the trash can, only for it to miss. I shrugged. Air resistance, what am I going to do about it?
Get up and throw it away, that's what I'm going to do. And then I'll crawl right back into bed.
A nap won't hurt. I might get in some more trouble, but disappointing people is what I seem to be doing best right now.
I pulled my blankets up on top of me, enjoin the warmth and the weight. It wasn't hard for me to fall asleep. Unfortunately, my dreams were filled with water.
The cool water of the ocean depths and the poison around me. I could feel it burning through my veins and filling my lungs as I breathed it in. I could have controlled it. Used it even. But in my mind, I knew I shouldn't. I shouldn't fight this.
I really wanted to tell Jason to leave, to go before my sister killed him, but I couldn't get the words out.
My eyes shot open and I gasped for air, coughing like I was trying to force the poison from my lungs.
"Sleeping was a bad idea." I groaned and sat up. I looked at my clock. Great. I slept through dinner too.
I really need to remember to set my alarm when I take naps. I ran my fingers through my hair, before tying it back.
Standing up, I pulled Riptide out of my pocket. The familiar weight settled in my hand and I started practicing random moves, most of them simple. I just wanted to do something to take my mind off of the nightmare.
That's the thing I hate about being a demigod. Our memories are so vivid, so fresh, that our nightmares are usually recreations of the events. I overheard Will explaining it to Nico once. It's from being half-god, we need to remember things more, whether it be a monsters weaknesses or what a god says.
The glowing blade sliced through the air, offering me comfort in the familar motions. My foot slipped when I stepped on a shirt I hadn't picked up. My swing went wide and the flat of my blade knocked one of Tyson's jars off of it's resting place.
It shattered against the wall. I dropped Riptide. I rushed over and knelt to the ground. I scooped the plant into my hands, ignoring the water. Tyson will be so upset if I kill this.
Glass sliced my hands and the blood mixed with the water. Placing the plant in the fountain, I turned my focus on the broken glass.
I carefully picked it up, wincing as the glass sliced my palm. Blood welled and dripped off of my hand. It coated the glass before I threw it away.
I stared at the cuts on my hands. I really should heal these, or at the very least wrap them but...
For some reason the pain makes me feel better.
I don't know why. But it does so maybe...I can actually feel better.
