"Eat." Dad placed a full plate in front of me. I stared at it. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, and rice.

"See, I would've but there's rice on this and rice isn't something I want to eat with my pancakes." I shoved it away. "Besides, I still need to-"

"You're not sacrificing any."

"I'm not hungry."

"You skipped dinner."

"There are berries in the woods. Not all of them are poisonous."

"Did you eat any?"

"Not any poisonous ones."

"Perseus, if you're going to lie, at least eat something."

"I didn't eat any-" I stopped as he glared at me. I picked up a small piece of bacon and ate it. "There. I ate. Now if you excuse me, I'm going to go check the canoes. Chiron said one of them was leaking and I'm pretty good at patching."

I got up and left, heading to the canoe lake. For once, I wasn't lying. I grabbed the canoe in question and the patching materials someone had placed next to it. I worked quickly and in silence.

"Did you get enough to eat?"

"I ate some berries earlier, Chiron. I'm fine," I said, standing up. "I think she's water worthy again. Let me just-" I pushed the canoe into the water.

"Shouldn't you be in it?"

"Anything I touch stays dry. Honestly, as long as there's not a huge hole in it, I could probably use it without focusing." I held out my hand and the water pushed the canoe back to shore.  I looked inside, noted that it was dry and pulled it until it rested with the others. "Did you want anything else?"

"Are you planning on returning home for the school year?"

I sighed and looked up at him. "I don't know. On one hand, it's what, my junior year? It'll be one of my last chances to have a 'normal' education. And then on the other hand, a lot of monsters are going to be after me. I don't know if I want to put people in danger, well, more than I usually do."

"You'll need to figure that out soon. Otherwise the harpies may kill you."

"Bold of you to assume I couldn't kill them." I chuckled. "Well, my works done here. I'm going to go take a nap or something."

"I believe your father wants you to meet him on the beach."

"Nice to know. I'm still taking that nap."

"It isn't wise to test a god."

"I might have been the one to ask for the gods to start visiting, but that doesn't mean I want to spend every second of the day with him." I stood up and looked at Chiron. "I need my space, something which Dad doesn't seem to understand." Though it's something the campers are doing a bit too well. "I'm getting tired of trying to do stuff by myself and having Dad show up. Do you have any idea how hard it is to try to read with him around?"

"I thought you didn't like to read?"

"I don't, so can you imagine how much harder it is?"

Before Chiron could get a word in edgewise, I walked away. I ignored the people moving towards their first class of the day. I ignored Dad as he walked towards me. I ignored him as he called out to me. I kept walking, heading to the barrier.

That must have worried him, because he appeared beside me. "Percy, are you okay?"

I didn't answer. Thalia's pine was right in front of me, the Fleece glittering in the morning light. I kept walking. Dad's hand wrapped around my arm seconds before I crossed outside of camp.

"What is brother's name are you doing? You know how dangerous it is to walk outside here alone."

"Monsters don't attack me."

"Percy, you're a demigod. They very much will-"

"They know what I can do. They know what I'll do to them if they ever try to hurt someone I care about," I said with a smile. It wasn't a happy one, no this one was feral. "Everyone thinks I came out of the Pit unchanged, but that place does stuff to you. You either give up or you fight. The only way for a demigod to survive that place is to become a monster in our own right. The bad thing is, you can't make someone into a monster you're just feeding something that was already there."

"Percy, nothing you can do could make you-"

"You can't say that. You have no idea what I did down there. I hate myself for what I did. I did it to stay alive, but I hate how much I enjoyed it." A shudder ran through my body. "You know, I don't know why I'm telling you this. All you're going to do is tell my dad." 

His eyes widened and then his form shifted to that of Hermes. "How'd you know it was me?"

"Despite my annoyance at Dad treating me like I'm two, I'm still his kid. The sea calls to its own and no amount of shapeshifting can change that. Why'd he put you up to this?"

"All he said was he couldn't stand how you were talking to him anymore. I think he left to go visit his wife."

I sighed. "Good. Maybe he'll start leaving me alone."

"Percy, what did you do in the Pit?"

"I teamed up with a giant and a Titan. Pretty sure teaming up with them makes me a monster of some sort. I like the power working with them offered. In the end, we sacrificed them to escape. Guess you guys should be glad that I'm on your side." I didn't want to tell him the full truth. I didn't need to. Since my flaw is what it is, betraying people could make me think of myself as a monster.

I'm getting way to good at this, but is that really a bad thing? Probably.

"Well, uh, just go easy on your old man, okay? He cares about you a lot. I don't know what's going on between you guys, but he's been really upset. Like talking to Athena upset."

"Yeah, I'll take that into account the next time he bothers me."
