Chapter Gimmick:
The entire level is pitch black. It is nearly impossible to see. Luckily, you have a glowbulb that floats over your head, providing a spotlight that allows you to see for a medium range around you as you move throughout the level. There is also light coming from Flynn's ship. It will pass over every fifteen seconds in the level, illuminating everything around you for one second.
Furthermore, there are Starlight Shards that can be collected throughout the level. If you collect all seven of the starlight shards, you can take them to the Light Tower which will activate with all 7 of them. This will illuminate the entirety of the level for any further playthrough. Most importantly, though, it will light up the boss fight so that you can actually see everything happening there.
Chapter Design:
It's a dark little village with most of its buildings being old and decrepit. The ground has sunk through in many places, creating a ravine that circles around the cathedral and the paths - avoid falling into it. The ground is full of rotted grass and patches of dirt.Level Start:
You begin the level in a small dirt area. You walk through it and into a small clearing. Their are two small buildings right here that you can go through. The first one (on the right) is the smallest and contains only a treasure chest. The second one (on the left) opens up on a small balcony overlooking the ground floor. Their are a couple of Dark Tumors in the house to look out for. You go down the stairs to the bottom floor and exit the building out into a large clearing.
A short cutscene plays where Flynn's ship passes overhead, revealing a figure in a cloak standing there, waiting for you.
Cali gasps and flashes her light at them, illuminating them.
"Come for the dark portal master, now have you?" They ask. "I'm afraid I can't let you do that. I'm his entrusted jailor, and I can tell you now that I. Won't. Fail."
They hold up their hand and snap. From the darkness comes a horde of mist monsters and enemies. The Jailor fades into the shadows.
This starts a battle in the clearing.
Upon beating all of the enemies, you are free to explore. The first starlight shard can be found here. There is also a building on the other side of the clearing, but it is locked for now. However, you can walk around the side of the house and collect the second treasure chest.
Moving on, you can find a short bridge leaving the clearing (going north — you started from the east — the locked building is in the west)
Crossing this bridge, you come upon a crossroads. Straight on is building #3 and to the right is a path leading up to the Light Tower. You take the right path to start.
Going up this way you find the Light Tower to be locked as of right now. You need all 7 starlight shards to access it — the second shard can be found in front of the tower's entrance.
Beside the tower is the Tech Realm. Using a tech Skylander, you access it. This reveals an old lift that takes you down into the ravine. It drops you off among a mining wreckage. You must navigate your way through it to find the area's hat. The only problem is that there are dozens of Nightmare Tumors littered throughout the wreckage — don't forget the only light comes from the glowbulb above your head. And in the ravines, the light from Flynn's ship that comes around every 15 seconds can't be seen.
You return to the above ground and head back down to the building at the crossroads. Entering it you fight off a couple of mist monsters before heading up the stairs. There's a gap in the flooring up there that if you leap across you will find a treasure chest.
