Luckily potions class was probably the safest place for canis since Snape was quick to punish anyone who even looked at her the wrong way. She noticed he was being especially hard on all the gryffindors but she didn't really care. She barely had the energy to follow along with the recipe on the board and she was thankful for the multiple times Draco saved her potion while she wasn't paying attention. Canis could tell he didn't know how to make her feel better but he tried as hard as he could to distract her from her depression. It was honestly very sweet but she was so numb that it felt like nothing really mattered.
The rest of the day went by in a haze, the sad young girl couldn't really get herself to stay mentally present in classes, every spell she was made to do messing up in some way or form since her uncanny abilities were obviously tied to her state of mind. It was clear to anyone that actually cared for her that she was in a deeply depressive state, rivaling even that of her seasonal depression. It seemed however that nobody actually knew how to help with the depression, not even Canis herself. And so the poor dear would just have to deal with it until it passed, as she always had.
At the end of the day, for once, Canis did not have the energy for homework. Instead she sat in her dorm room with Levi and the small unhatched Phoenix egg cradled in her lap as she stared into the flames of the fireplace in her room. Her dull eyes watching as the flames flickered and danced in the fireplace enjoying the warmth it gave her that she so badly needed. She'd felt almost frigid all day even the flames in front of her doing little for the ice that had settled in her bones. But at least sitting so close to the fire warmed her skin.
Unconsciously her mind began to influence the flames, Canis not really fully present as the flames curled and bent in ways that no normal fire should. Images began to form in the flames, passing fragments of thought that seemed to have no real end goal. Flickers of bullies, beatings and angry adults al quickly consumed by the flames as soon as they appeared. The flames only providing a small window into her mind not truly able to show the depths of her frightful imagination. Even at such a young age her mind could get quite dark if she let it. And she had not the energy to stop the dark depths of her mind from rearing their ugly head.
Old memories mixed with the darkness of her imagination as images of adult figures towering over small ones flashed in the flames. Said licks of heat seeming to consume the dark images, as if attempting to burn away such sad memories. In the next flicker of thought turned flame was the image of another small child, this time alone and yet surrounded by great licks of angry red flames, dwarfing the small figure to nothing but a pin prick. And yet just as suddenly as the small thing had nearly been smothered it grew, far bigger and stronger then any of the others, the form of the once small figure now bright blue and brilliant as it shot up, filling every available space in the fireplace. The blue light taking over every bit of red, as if scorching the dark images away, not allowing even a small flicker of red to show. And as if right on cue as Canis' eyes had bothered to notice the changing of the flames the little voice that had always sounded so venomous whispered this time with a sweetness and caring that made her heart ache "those without the tools to deal with fire will inevitably be burned by it. Those who dane to blame a fire for how hotly it burns are bound to be upset when the fire does not douse itself to suite their tolerance. You need not protect those that scorn your flames, instead protect those who might pour gasoline on your fire and watch with rapture as you burn the world to the ground around you."
Canis felt the absolute love and confidence the voice spoke with and it broke the deep numb that had blanketed her all day. A fresh torrent of tears streamed from her eyes as she inadvertently fell forward into the flames of the fireplace with a great shuddering sob. However the fire did not burn her instead it seemed to welcome her into the ash, the flames licking away her tears as fast as they could fall. Levi had dropped to the floor just out of the fires reach holding the Phoenix egg in his coils as he watched his master break for what seemed like the millionth time, to scared of the flames engulfing her to be able to comfort her, having already been burnt before.
