PAST:

He returned the stones, one by one, until there were two left: the space stone, that he got in the 1970's and the soul stone, that they got on Vormir. He still had a tiny, teeny bit of hope on the yellow stone, so he left it for last. So, there he was, in nineteen seventy-something. And there she was: his first love. In that moment Steve realized how much he had loved her, but also how she became more of a friend to him than anything else. They talked, they danced, and Steve got his closure, at least with her. And then there was Vormir.

Steve had all kinds of nightmares about that place, so many bizarre versions were created in his dreams, each one more horrible than the last one. And still, somehow, it was even worst than he imagined. It wasn't even about how it looked. Vormir was actually quite beautiful, the sky was a mixture of blue and purple and everything was quiet, too quiet. But the air, the air was so morbid, so terrorizing, so stuffy and paralyzing at the same time. And to complete the package, his archnemesis (that felt very silly btw) walking (more like floating actually) in his direction. They talked (barfed) to each other. Cap said he wanted Nat in exchange of the stone. The skull said it didn't work that way, yabadabadaba. Basically, after a lot (a LOT) of discussions, negotiations and predominantly treats, the red skull said that nothing like that had ever been done before, but that they could try to return the stole directly to the soul realm, and hope to get her soul back in return. So that's what they did.

The skull, that was kind of a bridge between the two worlds, returned the stone directly to the soul world, and all Cap could do was wait. And he waited. And waited. But nothing happened. Until something did.
