Narrator's pov (Steve):
She continues playing. He looks at her and has no doubt in his mind. So, he asks Sharon to step outside with him. He talks to her. He explained that she was amazing, but that it wasn't working out. He didn't specify that it was because of Natasha, he just told her there was a lot happening in his life right now and that when they started going out, he was still trying to understand his own feelings. He apologized; told her he didn't mean to hurt her.
She accepted well. She told him she realized that he was distant and that they didn't have a lot of chemistry. She went home, and he went back in, but by the time he made his way into the room, there was no sign of Nat.
At the same time (Natasha):
She continues playing. He looks at her and she can feel the butterflies in her stomach. She felt happy, home. But then she sees him whispering something on Sharon's ear, that smiled and followed him to the exit. He left. No, he left with her. They were probably going home together.
How could she have been so stupid. Of course! What did she expect? That he would wait for her for months, that she would come back, mess up with his life, and he would forgive her? He probably wanted revenge. That is probably what all of that was, revenge. He messed up with her head to get back at her.
No man can be that perfect to just ignore the bitch she was and just be with her even though he could be with any women in the world, including the ones that aren't damage goods like she is. - she thought
She finishes the song, everyone applauds, but he's not there. She get's up and tells Pepper she'll go get some air. She goes up to the terrace. The wind blowing at her face, and for a moment, she feels light.
She looks up and closes her eyes.
Steve's pov (after talking to Sharon):
I can't find her anywhere, and I looked EVRYWHERE. I'm almost climbing a table to have a better vision when someone holds my leg. I look down and see Pepper.
P: She said she went to get some air.
I thought about pretending I didn't know who she was talking about, but at this stage there is no point anymore
S: Thank you Pepper, I own you one. – and I leave, running, trying to make my way trough the crowd. I knew exactly where she was. The elevator is taking too long, so I run up the stairs. 20-something floors after, and I'm finally in the terrace.
Narrator's pov:
She looks up and closes her eyes. (Just so you guys know where in the story we are. Sorry if this chapter is a little confusing.)
The moon is illuminating her face, she's beautiful as ever, and Steve is just appreciating the view. (She still didn't notice him)
S: (thinking) *she looks so peaceful*
She looks down; open her eyes. Takes a deep breath... and starts to kick the railing. Really strongly.
S: HHEY hey hey, stop Nat. what's going on? - she stops, freezes at the sight of his voice. she slowly turns back to see him, almost like she was afraid to just be imagining him.
N: You are here?
S: Yes? Yes! What do you mean, am I here?
N: I thought you left
S: And why in earth would I do that?
N: I don't know... to be with Sharon maybe?
S: WHA- Nat why would you even think that?
N: Cause I saw you leaving with her
S: I wasn't leaving with her, I was leaving her. I asked her to step outside so that I could end things with her
N: Oh. I really thought you left.
S: I told you, I'm not going anywhere.
She just looks at him, processing. You know, just trying to figure out if he was real and stuff. She gets closer to him, and slowly puts her hand in his arm and then... pinches him???
S: OUCH what was that for?????
N: Just making sure you were real...
S: (smiling) Awn that's sweet
N: DON'T. CALL. ME. THAT
S: yesma'am
S: Hey Nat?
N: Uhmn?
S: You know the two papers I gave to you earlier? The notes you wrote that I found after you left?
N: Yeah, I have them here why?
S: Look behind them. That's your proof that I'm not going anywhere
She looks behind them and she recognizes his handwriting. He replied to her, in his own way.
She has tears in her eyes
S: I'm no poet like you, but I can guarantee you Nat, I'll do ANYTHING in my power to make sure I'm never losing you again.
N: I'm not going anywhere either – and this time, she meant it.
