__________
Fukuzawa's ability is an interesting one. And useful, for someone in a leading position. "All Men Are Equal". An excellent ability, but the name could use a bit of modernizing. It allows him to supress the abilities of those in the Armed Detective Agency. Or in simple words, his ability can adjust the power of the members' abilities, so that they may be controlled. However, a person must first pass an entrance exam to fall under the range of the ability. That includes you as well.
Your entrance exam ends up being something quite simple. You must accompany Ranpo to a crime scene. Seems easy enough, right?
Wrong.
Before even departing to the crime scene, Ranpo makes up about a hundred excuses on why he doesn't need to go. "It's too far!" "Y/n could go by themself!" "I don't feel like going anywhere!" "Travelling is such a waste of time."
These are just some of things Ranpo complains about. The more excuses he comes up with, the more expressionless Fukuzawa's face becomes. You can't help but admire the president's patience, all while knowing what is probably going on in his mind.
You promise to treat Ranpo to dessert after he solves the case and his eyes spark with slight interest, but the real dealbreaker is Fukuzawa giving in and promising to praise him.
Finally, you are both ready to depart.
Since the investigation site is quite far away and you don't know how to use your ability yet, your only other option of transport is the train. Ranpo has no clue how getting on a train works, so he follows you around like a baby duckling. People soon start to give the two of you strange stares, as he starts to loudly discuss the private details of each person that walks past you. The strangers get particularly upset when he comments on some problem they are clearly trying to hide. The detective only stops with the observations after you take his hand and drag him to the train. He shuts up immediately and stares at your intertwined hands for the whole of the train ride.
The reason behind Fukuzawa's constant headaches and his peculiar thoughts while dealing with Ranpo in "The Untold Stories Of The Detective Agency" light novel seems very clear now. You too, sometimes just want to tie up Ranpo, leave him on the street corner and go home. But alas, you would never do that. Just like the president himself, you are finding yourself becoming attached to Edogawa Ranpo, despite all his quirks.
You don't think he is trying to be mean, and occasionally his unfiltered comments even help. When the creepy man sitting on the opposite seat tries to hit on you, Ranpo casually asks some very interesting questions, including if his (very obvious) toupee ever helped with picking people up on trains. Safe to say the guy exits on the next station while tearing up, and you now hold a whole new level of respect towards your (soon-to-be) fellow detective.
Solving the case and discovering the perpetrator takes the two of you less than 5 minutes. Immediately after arriving, Ranpo (still holding your hand) points out the murderer. It's none other than the "grieving" widow. A typical motive for murder. The wife murdered the husband for money after he cheated on her. If she didn't just kill someone, you would congratulate her on getting the bag she deserves. Sadly, this material girl is a murderer, so congratulating her for the crime she committed would be very strange, especially for a detective such as yourself.
As promised, you take Ranpo to a crepe stand after the case is finished. He orders a few of them, and you can feel the little money you have in your wallet evaporate into the pockets of the crepe stand owner. But as Ranpo turns around, offering you one of the crepes he ordered, all the money in the world is suddenly worth it. Eyes sparkling with happiness, the genuine smile he gives you and the sweet and short "Thank you," he mumbles out with his mouth still full, make you feel all sugary inside. He gets excited like a child, you think to yourself as a soft smile creeps onto your face.
